Where Trump won: Historic ICE funding, triple wall miles, killed ‘poison pills’

WaEx: Republicans are pushing back on reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., beat President Trump in the latest budget shutdown fight, claiming that Congress approved historic funding levels for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, added miles to the border wall, and erased the cap on criminal illegal immigrants that can be jailed.

Insiders who worked on the deal said that compared to going along with a spending continuing resolution, the GOP scored several wins, though it did not reach the $5.7 billion funding Trump wanted for the wall.

“I know the conventional wisdom is that he lost on the wall in this package. But he gained … under impossible conditions,” said one insider on background.

@realDonaldTrump

Was just presented the concept and parameters of the Border Security Deal by hard working Senator Richard Shelby. Looking over all aspects knowing that this will be hooked up with lots of money from other sources….

@realDonaldTrump

….Will be getting almost $23 BILLION for Border Security. Regardless of Wall money, it is being built as we speak!

While a country mile away from being able to declare it a victory, the number of wins the GOP won in the three weeks of negotiations were sizable, said insiders.  Keep Reading

  1. om what I’ve read (WND, I think) the budget deal only allows a small amount of highly ineffective “pedestrian fencing” to be built in limited areas and not in the areas where illegal migrants cross and bans anything like a “wall” from being constructed with it.

    In addition, it adds serious restrictions on ICE and its ability to make deportations.

    Not something I would refer to as a win, just token publicity stuff to save face.

  2. Political blather from both sides. We won! No, we won!

    Bottom line, if one more illegal with a litter crosses, they’re home free. The only thing in the Bill that addressed this was an incentive to bring more UAC’s and/or family units. How is this a win for our side?

    We could put up impenetrable walls across the entire border, but until the Flores decision is struck down, chain migration ceases, anchor babies litigated, and mandatory E-verify, the Wall is but window dressing to slow them down, and neither party has the will nor interest to change that.

  3. Not mentioned in the article: the Democrats’ beloved clause allowing local bureaucrats to block wall construction was struck from the Bill.

    As much as it would have shown swagger to veto and force Congress to override, Trump had his reasons (maybe to avoid creating “override momentum” on other issues?). I can deal with that.

    Looks that way to me!!! A lengthy investigation may be needed.

  5. Once a government program is funded, it is nearly impossible to not keep funding it. So Trump getting any funding for the wall is a positive, and a good indication he will later get additional funds.

    How many politicians would have caved in or given up by now in the face of the opposition Trump has seen? My guess is “all of them,” but Trump is scoring successes despite the absolute opposition of the Democrats and the significant opposition of many Republicans.
