WFB: Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s $39 billion spending plan relies on shoppers paying a tax for every plastic bag they take home from the store, along with higher taxes on tobacco products, revenue from recreational marijuana licenses, legalized sports gambling and a tax on insurance companies that work with Medicaid patients.
The $39 billion spending plan is the largest in state history. Include matching federal funds, and the overall spending hits $77 billion.
The governor outlined plans for $1.1 billion in new revenue in his first budget address Wednesday in Springfield.
The new revenue in Pritzker’s budget plan will come from a variety of increased taxes, including $94 million from corporate taxes, $10 million for taxing e-cigarettes and $20 million from a 5-cent tax on plastic bags.
Republicans raised concerns about the governor’s budget proposal.
“I heard no spending cuts,” said state Sen. Dale Righter, R-Mattoon. “The only tax cut I heard was for people who are delinquent on their taxes and he’s going to give them a break to pay up.” read more

As Long as I’m stuck here, I could not have asked for a better New Tax Scheme … I do not smoke, use drugs and Aldi does NOT have plastic bags – bring your own. Wisconsin and Indiana are close enough for now to cut out those liquor taxes. Milk ’em dry!

Years ago Washington State greatly increased taxes on cigarettes. To Governor Lock’s (a Democrat) shock, people went into neighboring states and onto Indian reservations to buy their cigarettes (which is technically illegal but there was no mechanism to enforce that law, and probably a lot of campaign contributions not to) and state revenues from cigarette taxes actually took a nose dive even though there was no evidence that there was any reduction in smoking.

The Corrupt Socialist Republic of Illinois, my birthplace, and my entire family parted ways 6 years ago. It cost us several thousand dollars to leave Illinois, we recouped that expenditure the first year and am far into the black.
The worst part was leaving many good friends and people in Central and Southern Illinois.
