MSN News reprints a paywalled Los Angeles Times story on a startling development: California’s population growth has tumbled to the slowest rate in the state’s history. The wonderful weather, scenery, and other attractions that have drawn people since 1849 no longer work.
In asking themselves why this should be the case, writers Javier Panzar and Sarah Parvini manage to overlook the factor uppermost in my mind as I contemplate ending more than 30 years’ residence in the Golden State: the highest in the nation taxes, contrasted with the dismal state of the highways, schools, and other public services.
The effective tax burden on middle-class and above Californians just jumped last year, as the federal deductibility for state and local taxes was limited to $12,000 a year, which drastically affects homeowners of million-dollar houses (the average cost in many urban districts) and people who pay up to 13% in state income taxes. more here
Although family was reason #1, high taxes and cost of living were tied for #2 when we left Cal for Florida in 2012. I have a hard time imagining how much worse it is there now.
Florida isn’t perfect, but at least I don’t have to buy cheap shoes, if you catch my drift.
The LA Times is an otherwise useless democrat rag. Why would they start printing the truth when it go against the propaganda they print?

1. As UNCLE AL points out the cost of living has gone up dramatically in Cal for 40 years. the primary reason is not taxes but “tree hugger” laws. Taxes are a distant, but very important second! eg – a 3 bd room, 2 bath, 3 car garage house in 68 in Cerritos was $17,000 to $42,000. today they run from $600,000 to $3.800,000! These are the same homes! but new homes have so many tree hugger hoops to jump that they actualy cost more! Tree hugger laws!~
2. Up to ’00 More Americans came to Cal than left! In ’01 + ’02 more Americans left than came . Arnie stopped this for 2 yers. Then he became a Bush liberal and since ’06 more Americans leave than arrive.
the last 15years the # of Criminal Aliens arriving has been much more than Americans leaving! I think the LAT is wrong. I think Criminals coming far out # Americans leaving. But I could be wrong. Nay, never!

Skimmed the article. But i was looking for the word ABORTION. Maybe it was there. But ABORTION may be an additional factor affecting population decline. Yeah high taxes and all that, picking up your stuff and fleeing. I get all that. But you could get an abortion in California before Roe v Wade.
OK. Never mind. But it’s all explanable.
We can live with earthquakes and polluted air. It’s the liberal government that makes it difficult to live here.

California is HUGELY top-heavy with democrat bureaucrats.
It is also a complete welfare state, and heavily in debt with retirement benefits (the cash of which has funded democrat election victories.)
It is also PACKED with bums, criminals, unwed mothers, and illegal immigrants on welfare.
When enough people bolt the state, the state will crumble.
State taxes are no longer deductable from your fed bill.
