Trump plans to impose tariff on Mexico to encourage them to stop illegal immigration

Daily Caller: President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he intends to place a tariff on all Mexican goods until the country helps curb illegal immigration to the United States.

In a series of tweets, the president revealed the “big league” announcement on immigration that he teased Thursday morning.

“On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP,” Trump wrote. “The Tariff will gradually increase util the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time Tariffs will be removed.”

The White House followed the president’s tweets with an official presidential statement announcing the decision.

“Should Mexico choose not to cooperate on reducing unlawful migration, the sustained imposition of Tariffs will produce a massive return of jobs back to American cities and towns,” the president stated, arguing that Mexico has passively allowed a mass influx of illegal immigrants continue to the U.S., despite an ability to stop them.

Trump is invoking executive authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose the tariffs, following the national emergency declaration he made in February to help gather funding for the southern border wall.  read more

  1. Just 5%? Hell, we should be declaring war against Mexico for allowing an invading army to attack from their border. Might be a good thing I’m not in a position of power.

  2. Tariffs are great. If you want to stop the illegal immigration with them I suggest these:

For every public agency that gives anything to an illegal, there is a 10% decrease in their funding per instance until funding reaches 0.

For every employer that has illegals on staff, a 10% garnish of REVENUE for each illegal, with no limit. If you hire them and are found to be 10,000% underwater, sorry, that is a you problem.

Finally, any personal money transaction to Central America should have a 75% tariff on it.

Then let’s see what happens at the border.

  3. the mexican foreign minister is coming to DC on friday to ‘talk’ about it. He should be told to come in an empty plane, as he is going to go back fully loaded with deportees. Hell, tell him to bring a trailer too.

  4. Barriers to illegal immigration will fail if rewards for illegal immigration: employment, free schooling, free healthcare, free housing, free food, chain migration, etc.; are not eliminated.

Trump is doing what he can with the hobbles Congress and the courts have put on him. The greatest shame is that he could have done everything he promised, if Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell had not obstructed him at every move. They would likely have increased Republican dominance in the mid-terms had they cooperated — but that was never, and never will be, their goal.

  5. Waiting for the Avocado sob stories. The way I view this tariff is that even if I pay a bit more for a product its just an investment for security of my country. Money well spent.

  6. There isn’t anything made in Mexico that I can’t do without… Period!
    Including illegals!
This is gonna get Mexico’s attention!
They also know that they are dealing with Trump which means “Lip Service” isn’t going to cut it. Trump says what he means and means what he says.
    MAGA Baybee!

  7. The cost of the tariffs will be passed on to consumers, so Mexico is not “paying for the wall”. I don’t know how government channels revenues from tariffs but if it goes toward securing the border then I’m for it.

  8. Billy – yer somewhat right, but… if goods made in Mexico have to cut their prices to remain competitive then they actually do start paying for the wall. They will feel it for sure!
