Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) praises Trump admin plan requiring drugmakers to list prices in TV ads

The Hill: A top Democrat is praising the Trump administration’s plan to require drug manufacturers to list the price of prescriptions in their television ads, saying she believes it will help put public pressure on companies to lower them.

“I think that will really be helpful and I’m hoping that next month when it was scheduled to go into effect, that we’re going to finally see that for drugs that are really expensive,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) told Hill.TV during an interview that aired on Thursday.

Schakowsky, a senior chief deputy whip in House Democratic leadership, added that she believes the rule will create more public pressure on drug manufacturers over the cost of prescriptions, saying “there will be a bit of a shaming aspect to it.”

The Illinois lawmaker joined “Rising” to discuss the current state of the health care system and efforts to improve it as part of an ongoing series called “The Future of Medicare.”

Her comments come after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finalized a rule in May that forces drug makers to list the price for any medication covered by Medicare or Medicaid that is “equal to or greater than $35 for a month’s supply or the usual course of therapy.”

HHS Secretary Alex Azar, who announced the new policy, said the rule was designed to bring more transparency to the health care system, and help empower patients by allowing them to know their drug prices up front.

“Requiring the inclusion of drugs’ list prices in TV ads is the single most significant step any administration has taken toward a simple commitment: American patients deserve to know the prices of the healthcare they receive,” Azar said in a statement finalizing the policy.

The rule was scheduled to take effect in July, but is now facing pushback from drug companies and advertisers. more

  1. Okay, now that we’ve taken care of the medical field with disclosure, let’s make the politicians disclose how much money they make over and above their government paycheck.

“Okay, now that we’ve taken care of the medical field with disclosure, let’s make the politicians disclose how much money they make over and above their government paycheck.”

And what companies and lobbyists they get money from so we know who they really represent. They should have to have the names posted on their office doors so everyone knows.

  3. The more they “help” the more expensive it gets.
As in any other matter they use it to win political battles for purposes of pandering instead of mending the problem. What was once a product subject to the pressures of the free market that keeps prices affordable we get what we see today. But don’t worry, they’re working to fix it.

  4. As soon as “Health Care” became mandatory, there isn’t any competition for prices. Hospitals became money factories. Insurance Companies are as much to blame as well, for not calling BS on Hospitals.
My Mom got a bill from the clinic, a year after she died, for a physical, the insurance company paid it.
The whole system is corrupt, just like our government.
If any candidate is screaming tax the rich, it means “I got my money hid suckers”.
How many politicians have their own Foundations?
Hilary spent, $700,000,000, to lose a job that pays $216,000 a year.
TV, Radio, & Digital Media make big bucks as well.
2016 election: $6.5 billion for the presidential and congressional election.
2018 TV and radio: $3.27 billion, digital ads $900 million.
Enough to build a wall, feed the homeless, repair infrastructure.

  5. If you’re over 60 its curtains. You lived long enough, there is only so much money to go around and that goes to illegals and democrat supporters. We ran out of rich people to tax to support your health care.

  6. God Bless Donald Trump. He knows competition
is the lifeblood of capitalism and that it
keeps prices down. A common sense partial cure
for an ongoing problem with Big Pharma.

  7. About time an adult NOT shackled by Washington lobby favors told these grifters to do what is right. Next is the health insurance industry. My wife broke her arm on the ranch…checking out after the initial visit I asked the gal “Approximately what are we talking here?”…she looked at me like I had two heads. She had no idea what the cost would be. Told her “When I place my order at McDonalds they tell me the total cost BEFORE picking up my food. She did not appreciate the comment.

This “shell game” is all done to obfuscate the true cost in order to thieve what they can to the unsuspecting, uninterested, or uninitiated.
