79-Year-Old Woman Sentenced To Jail For Feeding Stray Cats

KFI:

A 79-year-old woman from Ohio will have to spend ten days behind bars for feeding stray catsNancy Segula says that she began feeding the cats in 2017 after her neighbor moved away and left the cats behind. When the cats started showing up on her back porch, she decided to feed them.

“It began in 2017 with me feeding stray kitties. I used to have a neighbor that had a couple cats, and he moved away, so he left them,” Segula told WJW. “I would always feed them and care for them because I was worried about them and I’m a cat lover.”

Her other neighbors were not happy that Segula was feeding the stray cats and called the animal warden to report her. She received a citation in 2017 but continued to feed the cats that were hanging out around her yard. more

  1. Feeding stray cats… Worthy of jail time… Stealing Presidential memos in your effort to foment a bureaucratic coup over a POTUS you merely dislike… no jail time at all.

    America!… What a country!…

Did you ever think when you eat Chinese,
It ain’t pork or chicken but a fat Siamese?
Yet the food tastes great, so you don’t complain.
But that’s not chicken in your chicken chow mein.

Seems to me I ordered sweet-and-sour pork
    But Garfield’s on my fork.
Hes purrin’ here on my fork.

There’s a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon,
The place that I eat every day at noon.
They can feed you cat and you’ll never know,
Once they wrap it up in dough, boy.
They fry it real crisp in dough.

Chou Lin asked if I wanted more
As he was dialin’ up his buddy at the old pet store.
I said “Not today. I lost my appetite.
There’s two cats in my belly and they want to fight.”
I was suckin’ on a Rolaid and a Tums or two,
When I swear I heard it mew, boy.
And that is when I knew,

There’s a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon,
I think I gotta stop eating there at noon,
They say that it’s beef or fish or pork,
But it’s purrin’ there on my fork,
There’s a hairball on my fork

  3. Everyone is speaking slowly in that report, as if they’re addressing mentally challenged..oh wait.

Many jurisdictions front-load pet ownership (and cut off a lot of problems at the pass) by requiring registration, which also helps define who’s responsible if things go awry. Shots, spay/neuter, and what-not. If an animal isn’t tagged, it’s scooped up for the pound. Why didn’t this one do that? She might not do the ten days on appeal, but this has the effect of highlighting the problem of being irresponsible with animals little old lady or not.

There’s a feral colony up the road near a strip shopping center that absolutely reeked of cat spray. I had to roll up the windows at the stoplight. Cat ladies would keep feeding them and provide no care beyond that. It’s taken nearly three years for all of them to be trapped.

    I miss my dog.

  4. After reading that article, I have questions.

What does the ordinance actually say.
How many cats are we talking about.
Why didn’t she just adopt them if these are only a few known neighbor cats.
What else are we not being told.

  5. I have to ask the “family”, given that we clearly are inhabiting a nearly eternal Twilight Zone episode, is Rod Serling still chain smoking? If so, where do they let him do it??

  6. If only Hillary had fed stray cats instead of the litany of destroying evidence, obstructing justice, neglecting an embassy and on and on, then she’d be in jail instead of thumbing her nose at justice!

  7. Yeah, CNN. But it’s the first one I found that had a count. How does 22 cats grab you? Plus she’s been cited going back four years. She is getting a new hearing, but unless you live in the country where natural predators will keep things in balance a bit, 22 is too damn many. The neighbors did not appreciate their, ah, contributions.

Again, does the town or whatever not have an animal control station?

  8. according to RosalindJ:
So not all the facts were written into the article, as pointed out by previous posters. The woman had created an unsanitary, unpleasant environment for her neighbors. She was at fault and refused to cooperate. She is not an innocent, old lady. No tears for her. BTW, cats tend to multiply in quantity.

“Segula was convicted after her first citation in 2015 and was sentenced to two years of probation in 2017 after various citations, including having too many animals and not disposing of the waste that was often found in her neighbors’ yards, Riley said.
She was told not to feed the strays anymore, but he says that request was ignored.”

“Riley said 22 cats have been removed from Segula’s home.”

  9. Sentencing a 79 year old person, for benign behavior, is evidence of a burgeoning tyranny.

We have captured several litters over the years past from this one particular very fertile gal cat. Anyway, we grabbed her finally, and her last girl, and had them FIXED. All of those kittens were given solid homes.

That ‘mother superior’ as we called her, died, but we do have the girl that I will go out and hang with on the front porch after this post. She is about 15.

I wonder what my crime will be in the future?

  10. Seriously, her behavior could be a symptom of dementia onset. While in protective custody she should be given a mental health check-up. That she could not relate to her own neighbors being upset is not normal behavior after so many years in the same neighborhood. A person who disregards official warnings may one day emotionally decide to shoot a cop that comes to her door. Her motto–cats before cops. Ignoring a problem can make it get much worse.

Cats kept healthy by a vet is not as much a problem as feral cats.

“Cat scratch fever, also called cat scratch disease (CSD), is a bacterial infection. The disease gets its name because people contract it from cats infected with Bartonella henselae bacteria.”
