Colorado Voters Reject Forking Over More Money to State Government

WFB: Colorado voters Tuesday rejected a ballot question that would have let the state increase its revenuesΒ by keeping monies that are over collected.

The Taxpayer Bill of Rights, or TABOR, is a law that caps state spending every year using a formula based on population and inflation. Monies collected in excess of that spending limit are supposed to be returned. Proposition CC asked voters to let the state keep those over collections in perpetuity rather than cut refund checks or give the money back in other legally allowed ways.

The rejection of the measure may signal to Democratic presidential candidates that swing-state voters are reluctant to green light new taxes or spending programs.

The election was called by the Associated Press less than two hours after polls closed in the state. At the time, the measure was losing roughly 55-45 with dozens of counties still outstanding.

Although tax rates may remain unchanged, revenues to the state can surge when the economy is good, and if those revenues exceed what the state can legally spend under TABOR, the refund is triggered. read more

  1. I remember ‘tales’ when the representatives were physically removed from their offices and tarred and feathered in the street in order to keep them in check.
    Good times,,,,

  2. Living in Colorado, I am thrilled that this abomination was rejected. TABOR was passed in 1992 to limit tax increases unless they were approved by a majority vote in the state. CC was advertised as not being a tax increase, but the end game was to allow the state to keep any excess revenues without raising taxes.
In other words, we won’t raise taxes, but we won’t give you back tax money in excess of what has been approved. Can you say burblespeak for ignoring what is in the state constitution?
Props to the people in the state for defeating this piece of crap.
Now, if they could only follow up with wins for conservative candidates. Of course that means that the state GOP has to actually run good candidates with good policies. Not holding my breath on that.

  3. The dems have a pretty tight lock on the state and they’ll just find another underhanded way to scam money from the public. Once they get control of the mechanics of the state it’s very difficult to ever get rid of them. They have every advantage because they’re so willing to apply corrupt means to keep in power.

  4. 🏈🏈🏈 GREEN BAY PACKERS 🏈🏈🏈

They BEGGED the state and taxpayers on a referendum for 100s of millions in funding for their stadium renovations, now they turn around and cut 6-figure novelty checks to their favorite charities.

Refund that money to taxpayers? Nah!

    Thanks scumbags!

  5. Well next year they’re gonna have a choice between Donald Trump and Socialism (regardless of which one of the remaining clownfarts they slap on it). If they are so concerned about their tax dollars just wait until Socialism grabs hold of ’em!!

  6. To me the big surprise and indication we were right to get out of CO in the last few years is how close this was. It should have lost by 70% or more. Part of the reason it was shot down was because it also eliminated a $200k homestead deduction for elderly and disabled veterans and older voters were first to return ballets. How disgusting a state that promised marijuana was going to be the solution tried to disingenuously steel a deduction from people with limited income all because they won’t just prioritize what needs to be done vs growing gov with stupid new departments like the Office of The Future of Work.

  7. Sometime in the 90s, MN had collected more taxes and actually gave us taxpayers a refund. One of the last few years I lived there, they had the same issue. They kept it.

I think they justified it by saying they were going to spend it on their beloved choo-choo (mass transit that no one wanted except the childish members of the MET council).

  8. β€œThe bad news is that we collected too much in taxes. The good news is that we get to keep it anyway.”

If this thing had passed then what was the point of the first law?
