GWP: Referring to it with happy little buzzwords such as “climate justice,” the city of Portland will soon be implementing the first (and hopefully only) “green new deal” carbon tax in the nation, which city “leaders” estimate will suck $60 million out of the economy. The money will allegedly be going toward “creating” “green energy” jobs. They say the tax will only affect The Evil Corporations™ specifically referring to Walmart.
The “Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Initiative” was passed via ballot initiative in the 2018 election, when 173,000 people voted for it. It was originally projected to raise $30 Million. Now the city gets to see what they voted for.
Oregon Public Broadcasting reported in 2018:
Proponents, mostly local community organizations, said the benefits far outweigh any potential drawback, especially for communities of color — which they argue are disproportionately affected by climate change. The measure’s steering committee includes Verde, the Coalition of Communities of Color, the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon and the Portland branch of the NAACP, among others.
Willamette Week reports today:
In just a few months, the city of Portland will begin investing the proceeds from a groundbreaking new tax on large companies.
“It’s a model for the rest of the nation,” Mayor Ted Wheeler said recently. “A beacon and a testament to our community’s belief in doing things a different way.”
The Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund, or PCEF, will raise as much as $60 million a year from a new tax on big retailers. The money is supposed to supply clean, efficient energy and jobs to people the city has long slighted.
At its core, the concept transfers wealth from big corporations such as Walmart to low-income Portlanders of color. It’s a local version of the Green New Deal proposed in 2019 by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). It’s also part of a larger political effort to reshape who calls the shots—and who benefits—in America’s whitest big city.
Never has City Hall had so much money to spend with so few strings attached. The guidelines for spending the tax are squishy, as are the yardsticks for measuring the effectiveness of those expenditures. read more
Does anyone anywhere truly believe this BS? How does climate affect one race? How does it know to affect a certain race? When whites become the minority in this country in a generation or two will climate then switch gears and affect mostly the minority whites? See how this nonsense plays out?
What can possibly go wrong?😂
Why only $60 million? Why not make it $600 million? If some is good, then more must be better, No?
This just makes living there more expensive and puts more of those who are just barely hanging on and can’t pay the extra cost to live their marginal lives out on the streets.
“…the Coalition of Communities of Color, the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon and the Portland branch of the NAACP, among others.”
…I sense no anti-White racism here…/s
I’ll pay mine in a paper bag, left on the doorstep of my ‘favorite’ democrap politician.
Light it on fire, ring the doorbell, and walk away.
Happy carbon tax! 😡
Watch Walmart pull out of Portland and start a flood of liberal tears.
Another reason to never ever go back to Portland for any reason whatsoever. Including going to Powell’s bookstore which I used to love when I lived there in the early 70’s. I wish you bad luck with your stupid, dumbass idea of turning Portland into a ecoweenie/ecotopia/dystopic/socialist paradise.
…you know, the “tax income” mistake liberals ALWAYS make is assuming the target of their tax will just stand still and absorb it. This is why they always 3nd up LOSING revenue with new taxes, because people/businesses/corporations don’t HAVE to take it.
Put another way,
“…Then there was communism’s weak-tea sister, socialism. Socialists maintained that we shouldn’t take all the money away from all the people since all the people don’t have money. We should take all the money away from only the people who make money. Then, when we run out of that, we could take more money from the people who…hey, wait! Where’d you people go? What do you mean you’re “tax exiles in Monaco?”
P.J. O’Rourke (2014). “The C.E.O. of the Sofa”
…tax revenue is NEVER a constant, althogh ALL Government budgeting treats it like it IS. Unfortunately, if you do something like, say, levy a crippling racist tax on a business because it’s sucessful, you CHANGE how sucessful that business is, and that forces them to recalculate the profits you are taxing short-term (as they probably change their CUSTOMER behavior by passing the taxes on), AND whether it still makes business sense to stay in a place with crippling taxes when there’s a cheaper place just down the road.
N.B. to Wal-Mart, et.al…
I would advise not doing business in a city that takes your property, e.g. taxes, with the stated goal of redistributing them in violation of the 14th Amendment, with no more legal underpinning that, because, environmental racism, or something. If it’s THAT easy for them to help thrmselves to YOUR income for THIS, it’s PROBABLY not the LAST time they’ll be dipping from your well on a whim, just sayin’…

Totally agree with SuperNightShade. I live in Canada and the Federal Liberal party legalized marijuana and its sales back in October 2018. They were rubbing their hands with glee, thinking of all the money they would make. Now over a year later, only the friendly neighborhood drug dealer is still making money. There is a wave of bankruptcies among all the legal store outlets and the supply houses. Only government could make a “total balls-up” of drug dealing.
Gosh Wally, if Walmart pulls out of Portland where will the muzlims shop??
Across the Columbia River in Vancouver.
It just means there’s more hydrocarbons for me to burn.. and I appreciate that. Only thing better would be to funnel that $30M directly to me so I can better fund my hydrocarbon purchases in bulk.
I’ve another tire to throw on the fire.

…CA’s response to this same problem was the typical liberal one, e.g. don’t lower the tax, just mobilize the National Guard to enforce your cartel at gunpoint…

…just give Justin a minute, he’ll wipe his Blackface off long enough to get shooty there, too, it’s where Comnunism ALWAYS ends up…
1% now next year 3% which will include all business and so on. Then a tax on leaving the state then a tax on going out of business. Seems like the only way to make a living would be do it with a government grant with a failed business model.
If I owned a company with stores in Portland I would be closing them today. That tax just starts at $60 million and will forever go higher. All for a money grabbing scam!
^^^ Yup! There’s never enough!
Politicians know if yer sucker enough to put up with the first wave of taxes, you’ll tolerate the inevitable increases! The incontrovertible truth is: Give them money and they’ll always find a way to burn though it and ask for more!

^^^ Wierd, I tried posting a comment three times and it would not post.
If you believe in Science!™, then you “know” that there is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine. Creating work, expends more energy than it can shift. There’s some kind of lies about that, by some old, white, thankfully dead (Hey, Oprah! How you bin?), guy.
If Portland wants to maximize Green™, by minimizing loss, they should just send the cash right to the People™. In fact, considering the losses that must (it’s Science!™) occur, just by transferring the cash, the People™ should just take it, themselves.
This Texan Has Had Enough – You are absolutely right. It’s never enough.
Politicians know that if yer sucker enough to put up with the first wave of taxes, you’ll tolerate the subsequent increases!
Dinosaur story time…
Many years ago our friends the “cheeseheads” (WI DNR) decided to raise the cost of licenses significantly with non-residents being the primary target. They looked forward to the utopia that they would create with all the extra revenue. Well the “flatlanders” to the south and other nonresidents decided that there were many places within their own states to hunt and fish and the revenue went DOWN.
Anyone want to guess what solution they came up with to make up for the short fall?
Yep, they raised the price some more…
“Green energy jobs” means creating a new city bureaucracy to oversee the collecting of the funds.
Massive growth occurring across the Columbia River in Washington State. Not pleasant.
It must be working. I’m on my way to Portland and it’s snowing.
WHy take taxes to create wages for “green energy jobs”?
Let the “green energy jobs” create their own wages.
Corporations don’t pay taxes, they only collect them. If the stupid people want to throw their money away for their feelz I don’t care.
Portland has defined itself as a City of perpetual adolescents. Naked Bike Ride and Keep Portland Weird are what a critical mass of the residents identify with. They want attention, but are seeking attention in ways that take no talent or commitment to excellence. It is tragic to watch this go down.
Portland, Oregon: future site if America’s first Zombie Apocolypse.
Followed by Seattle, of course.
“At its core, the concept transfers wealth from big corporations such as Walmart to low-income Portlanders of color.”
A simpler way to transfer the wealth is to follow the CA model and raise the shoplifting limit to $950. The Portlanders of color will figure out what to do on their own.

I’m conflicted. Is it more racist to agree with you? Or disagree?
Just turn back the clock to the late ’70s and you will see the start of the “californication” of Oregon. You now see the result in this crap. Watch out. There a many more fleeing CA now and I’ll bet they bring their crap ideas with them. Good luck.
