Neil Peart, the legendary drummer for the popular Canadian rock trio Rush, has died at age 67, the band announced Friday.

Peart died on Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., after battling brain cancer, family spokesperson Elliot Mintz said in a statement obtained by CBC News.

A statement posted on the band’s official Twitter page said: “It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and bandmate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer …” MORE

  3. Sad. Brain cancer has got to be a bitch.

    Aside from that, I’m perplexed how a trio can be a rock & roll band. Three Dog Night was another one. OK, you have to have a drummer, e.g., Neil Peart, a singer, and at least one guy on guitar. Who is going to do keyboards? Or if the guitar guy does rhythm, who does the bass guitar?

    It seems like something is missing in a 3-man Rock & Roll band.

  7. Three guys who are nearly the world’s best at what they did. That was Rush. Neil Peart and Keith Moon were the two best ever. What a legend. I had no idea he was ill. What an incredible life. RIP to the greatest.

    The Blue Moon Boys, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush, Cream, ZZ Top, The Police, Grand Funk Railroad, Robin Trower, Emerson – Lake and Palmer, Nirvana.

  10. I saw Rush many times in the llast half of the 1970s. They always put on a good show. My high school friend was a drummer in a band and used to drool over Pearl”s drum set.

  12. Damn. One of my favorite bands, they even did anti-collectivist songs. Ayn Rand fans. Can’t dance to most of their tunes because of the time signature.

  13. My wife and I saw Rush and then a few days later saw Fleetwood Mac in the same venue. The 3-man band had more sound coming off the stage than the 5-person band with a full orchestra back-up. Geddy Lee played bass and keyboard interchangeably {https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz0YjPJBXFY} & then also played keyboard by foot {https://www.quora.com/How-does-Geddy-Lee-the-frontman-of-Rush-simultaneously-play-the-bass-and-keyboards}.
    Fleetwood Mac was good but each person had someone backing them up, even Lindsey had two guitarists backing him up.
    Two of my wife’s favorite bands. I know that she’ll be pretty sad so I’m going home early today.
    Rest in Peace Neil. Hopefully get to see ya on the other side.

    Incredible…I think at one time He was the fastest Drummer ever?

    Peart was also a avid motorcyclist, who would take long rides around the world on his BMW R1100 GS and would squeeze rides in between shows and tours.

  22. RIP, Neil…

    I was never a big Rush fan, but that was due to my not liking Geddy Lee’s voice. Like nails on a chalkboard to me.

    I did feel they were a great band, though. Neil’s lyrics were exceptional, and his drumming was sublime. And that drum kit was the Holy Grail to drummers.

    I thought Alex Lifeson’s guitar work was great, and I even liked Lee’s bass and keyboard work. But I just couldn’t get past that voice.

    In a Trio, you have to play both the music and the silence. The worst sounding thing I’ve heard is at the end of a ‘Tribute’ concerts, there are 19 guitarists all playing the same tune together.

  27. “With acknowledgement to the genius of Ayn Rand.” That liner note on 2112 changed my life by pushing a young rebel to truly contemplate the ideas of freedom. Peart had perhaps the largest impact on my life of any non-family member, ever. I love him enough to forgive his mushy old-age liberalism. (That’s probably what gave him the cancer.)

    …I had a green Dodge Dart, one of the all-metal ’70s ones that was bigger than modern-day luxury cars, and I liked that album so much that I decided what that car REALLY needed was a giant, red pagan star painted across the ENTIRE hood, too.

    I thought it looked pretty nice, but my parents were less than impressed.

    …the cops dug it, though, I could tell by how closely they watched me every time I went out for a drive with the wing windows open and my 40 watt Realistic by Radio Shack power booster amplifying “Passage to Bangkok” to where it could almost be heard outside the car.

    …good thing it was a Slant 6 that wasn’t that sporty about moving all that metal, which denied them the reward of ticket writing for all their vigilance.

    Great band – instrumentally fantastic. Was not a Geddy Lee vocals fan.

    Was going to refrain from commenting, but Pinko nailed the main reason I disliked the band in general. Side note: I noticed chicks really liked high pitched male vocals back then. Thought it was weird then and still do.

    I’ll add three more things:

    IMO, Edmund Fitzgerald was probably worse than anything else in the 70s simply for being played WAY too much.

    Also, Epstein didn’t kill himself and neither did Soleimani.

  37. Was a huge Rushie. Listened to 2112 at the age of 11 and was overwhelmed. Geddy’s Rickenbacker was it for me and I took up the bass guitar. Saw them in 1977 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. I was 12, my first concert ever.

    Peart was incredible. His nickname, “the professor,” is appropriate. Many, many rockers attribute their motivation to Peart and the band. I regard the Hemispheres album (‘75) as their best, with Peart’s drumming as standing out in particular. Just wow. Who the heck writes an 18 minute song? Neil Peart, that’s who.

    And I don’t care what anyone says: Caress Of Steel is a fantastic album. (For those who may not know, this was their 3rd album, the second with Peart writing and playing, and it was not well-received. The band referred to their tour for this as the “down the tubes” tour because they didn’t think they would make it.)

  38. Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to express how I felt when I heard the news- I regret not seeing Rush in Phoenix 5 years ago when I had the chance. 😔

    I’m praying for his family.
