Ilhan Omar Criticized for Saying ‘Ethos’ of G.I. Bill Should Be Applied to All Students

Breitbart- Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was criticized on Twitter after she said that the “ethos” of the G.I. Bill that gives military personnel the option to go to college for free should be applied to everyone.

“Imagine what it would do for our country and those who live here if we were to take the ethos behind the original G.I. Bill and apply it to everybody—canceling all student debt and making public colleges, universities, and vocational schools tuition-free,” the Minnesota Democrat tweeted Thursday.

Omar’s tweet came along with an AlterNet piece from Marine veteran Will Fischer, titled “A veteran explains why we need a new version of the G.I. Bill — for everyone.”

Critics on social media immediately pointed out the costs of a “free” education provided by the government, especially pointing out that veterans had to serve their country oftentimes in war to receive that education. read more

  1. When “everyone” joins the military, works their ass off, and serves an honorable term of service, with an honorable discharge, then they, too, can get the same benefits as the GI Bill.
Until that happens, I ain’t holding my breath waiting.

  2. “Free” education will be worth exactly what you pay for it.
Look how the government money has already turned once decent colleges into agitprop training schools for commies.

  3. People speak of the “GI Bill” like it is a single thing. It is not. It has many tiers, depending on when your enlistment occurred it can be quite generous or almost non-existent.

  4. And then there is this telling quote in the underlying article:

“…For starters, in a report from 2018, the Levy Institute found that student debt cancellation would result in boosting real GDP by an average of $86 billion to $108 billion per year, lowering unemployment, and increasing home-buying potential…”

The Levy Economic Institute of Bard College. The same Bard College that George Soros is investing in.

Do you see how the dems/progs/socialists/communists create their own credibility. It’s all a self-constructed lie.

“The overwhelming majority of Americans believe….” LIE!

  5. Systems that provide free post-secondary education also tend to: determine what subjects and fields are needed; implement strict quota systems; and use entrance exams to test students in high school for aptitude and merit.

  6. George W,
Did you NOT read my comment at the top?
Generally, those that you describe do NOT work, they do NOT get advanced/promoted in rank, they do NOT serve an honorable term of service, they are NOT given an honorable discharge.
Therefore, they do NOT get the GI Bill.

  7. There is a program in place where anyone can get a free education. It’s called “Earn a Scholarship”. Go to high school, work hard, study hard, get excellent grades, stay out of trouble, be a good citizen and you can get a free (or almost free) college education.
Is that too much to ask for a free ride? Then join the military you lazy doper, if they’ll take your sorry ass.

  8. I earned my Bill with four tough years, a few scars, a few medals, and an honorable discharge. I do not want to see those who didn’t serve…washouts, brig dirtbags, sh*tbird losers, Big Chicken Dinner winners…getting it. No sir.
