White Choir Sings Black Spirituals and All Hell Breaks Loose

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD.

TownHall| Todd Starnes:

Should white people sing black spirituals?

Western Michigan University is grappling with that question after a black student was triggered and suffered a social media meltdown when a predominantly white choir sang “Wade in the Water.”

“So apparently Western Michigan University thinks it’s ok for WHITE peoples to sing negro spirituals while the instructor talking bout ‘these songs don’t belong to one race.’ They sure as hell DO,” WMU music major Shaylee Faught wrote on a social media now seen by more than 1 million people.

Faught got triggered after the choir’s black conductor reportedly told the audience that the selections were “American songs” performed “for everyone” and “have no ethnicity.”

The performance, “Spirituals: From Ship to Shore,” included songs like “Go Down, Moses” and Wade in the Water.”

Well, faster than you could say Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, nearly the entire campus suffered a meltdown.

“We as a collective are appalling that this took place on our campus,” The Black Student Union wrote in a statement. “This act is a further example and reflection of the racial insensitivity and ignorance that has been allowed to occur on Western Michigan’s campus.” read more

  1. I wonder how many songs written by white composers or song writers Ms. Shaylee Faught sings to herself in the shower? Or Latin music? Or Asian music?

These idiots need to take a deep breath, and if they cannot handle other people enjoying and sharing music across cultures they can just hold their breath until they expire!

  3. It sounds like Shaylee endorses segregation and an elimination of ALL cultural appropriation. She needs to think this through because she might nor appreciate living in a thatched hut held together vines and mud. I could discuss dietary changes for her but she probably believes her ancestors dined regularly on rib eye steaks and mashed potatoes with butter and sour cream. The list could go on and on.

  4. Can they sing Dixie anymore or any Steven Foster song? Stan Freberg parodied this years ago when a censor wanted to and kept interrupting him when he was singing old songs like Old Man River etc. and other old songs from the 19th Century. He was way ahead of his time with his parodies which are still as funny now as they were back then in the mid 50’s. Zipitty Doo Dah, Zippity Yay, my oh my what a wonderful day.

  6. In past days Black people revolted against segregation and got rid of it so they could be integrated with White culture on an equal basis.

Now they are demanding a return to it.

What next, a return to colored entrances to buildings and drinking fountains and such?

  7. The only people who ought to have a dog in this fight would be Christians, and guess what?, Christians aren’t offended by other Christians singing hymns of worship and praise. Why would they? So shut up, atheist/agnostic snowflake, this is none of your business. If you bow down to Jesus, you’d be ashamed of today’s work.

Wade in the Water is one my personal favorites, too.

  8. It’s Kalamazoo. Everyone is bored and frustrated that the bigger world is leaving them behind. Trust me on this, I got my undergrad there. When karaoke came on the scene it was like the second coming of our Savior.

  9. Daryl Hall has a message for critics crying cultural appropriation: “Shut the f*ck up”

Salon: One of the current debates is over “cultural appropriation” – The idea that white people should not appropriate the culture of ethnic and racial minorities. I know that you don’t like the term “blue eyed soul.” Have you followed this conversation?

Hall: Are you trying to say that I don’t own the style of music that I grew up with and sing? I grew up with this music. It is not about being black or white. That is the most naïve attitude I’ve ever heard in my life. That is so far in the past, I hope, for everyone’s sake. It isn’t even an issue to discuss. The music that you listened to when you grew up is your music. It has nothing to do with “cultural appropriation.”

Salon: I agree with you entirely, because…

Hall: I’m glad that you do, because anyone who says that should shut the f*ck up.

Salon: Well, this entire critique is coming back…

Hall: I’m sorry to hear it. Who is making these critiques? Who do they write for? What are their credentials to give an opinion like that? Who are they?

Salon: Much of it is academic.

Hall: Well, then they should go back to school. Academia? Now, there’s a hotbed of idiocy.

  10. A few years ago, we watched a performance of the USAF Academy band. Mostly, they performed wearing the USAF mess dress uniforms, with the Colonel (conductor) wearing the more formal full dress uniform (white tie and tails).
They broke out into a tribute to the Glenn Miller Band, wearing the led WWII Army Air Corps uniforms.
During these tribute songs, one white sergeant trumpeter pulled out his handkerchief and did a dead on Louis Satchmo Armstrong with that perfect raspy voice.
    No one objected.

This drivel from a college student. WMU must be proud.

  13. Well, I just hope that the management team… that brought us Shaylee Faught… and The Black Student Union… and “Spirituals: From Ship to Shore”… the… exact… same… crew… is also running the engineering school… and the math (which is hard) school… oh, and especially the Science™! school. We’ve got first-world problems. In this first-and-a-third-world country. There’s bridges that need built. And Green™ steam rockets. And… and… stuff.
