Chocolate Gravy

I had no idea…

  1. This is the basic recipe for chocolate cake “icing” (not the same as frosting) the way my mom used to make. If you leave the flour out, I think it will harden (hence the name “icing”) instead of being like a gravy. A friend of mine in MS says that chocolate gravy has been a family favorite for her bunch for many years, and that her mother used to make it in the 60’s. I suspect it would do just as well on good yeast rolls (I buy frozen ones like “Sister Schubert’s”) as it is on biscuits.

In fact, I can’t imagine much that chocolate gravy wouldn’t be good on. Sugar, cocoa powder and butter are kinda the trifecta of southern cooking.

  2. My parent’s friend used to love chocolate cake with beef or chicken gravy poured all over it. At church potlucks, we used to watch him do that and everyone went, “YUK”, as he thoroughly enjoyed eating it.

    I still think, “YUK”!

  3. Gravy on chocolate cake sounds pretty – weird. About as appealing as peanut butter and pickle sandwich.

When I was about 12 y.o. I discovered a neighbor family ate their ice cream with saltine crackers. I tried it, liked it and have ate it that way since then. I frequently get strange looks at Wendy’s when I ask for crackers with my ice cream, rather than with chili.

Now I see various kinds of saltine cracker ice cream sandwiches recipes can be found online. Here’s one recipe without chocolate on it.

There’s even a recipe for ice cream and cheddar cheese. I’ll skip trying that one.
