…a very common way of “paying” your troops throughout history has been to promise to allow them time to pillage and rape after they’ve done your bidding. They LOVE it, they get to vent on people YOU want utterly defeated anyway, it costs YOU nothing, and it grinds the boot into the people you’ve just subjugated.
