Toddler Gets Lifted 30 Feet In The Air After Getting Caught In Kite’s Tail

KEIB: A toddler ended up going for a ride after getting a little too close to a large kite at the Hsinchu City International Kite Festival in Nanlioao, Taiwan.

Dramatic video captured a group of men unfolding the tail of the large orange kite as they prepare to fly it. Once the wind takes hold of the kite, stunned bystanders watched in horror as a three-year-old girl went airborne after getting tangled in the kite’s tail. WATCH

  1. Wow! Lucky little girl! What are the odds of her getting entangled so firmly she didn’t come loose and fall?!

I used to fly twin-line parasail stunt kites. I kept my kit in the van for when I was on hang gliding jaunts and conditions weren’t right for flying myself. Most people have no conception of the forces involved with a high performing kite and a stiff breeze. With one setup, I used 150 lb. Kevlar lines and had one break kiting near Jockey’s Ridge. I’d have another large guy holding onto my harness on days like that. It was necessary to keep from getting pulled and dragged myself, and I was 6’1″ and 230 lbs. back then (I’m an inch shorter and *mumble*cough* heavier now).

  2. @RADIOATIONMAN/HAM/CB/AM/FM/SSB/VHF/UHF — Yeah, 100′ sounds more like it. It sure looked like more than 30′ to me but it’s hard to gauge things like that in a video with no background, and no clear knowledge of how far it is from the camera to the action.
