Mule deer do this. They almost always stop after some distance and look back. That’s when you blast them. Whitetail deer never stop and look back. They run like scalded apes until they are out of sight.

You are sooooo right.
I have hunted whitetails my entire life. Once spooked they run for at least a 1/4 mile and into heavy cover before they stop.
I got a chance to hunt mule deer in Wyoming 12 years ago (near Cody). Almost every one of them ran about 50 yards and turned to look back, giving a perfect shot. I got to choose the 4×4 (10 point by eastern method) I wanted and dropped him with a perfect heart shot.
