I would suggest doubling them up. If one is good, two is better. Common sense.
Calling for two masks is admitting that one doesn’t work, IMO.
I think that could probably be demonstrated statistically by where the concentrations of the positives are and where they are not, but that’s just speculation on my part.
As you add layers you increase the resistance to flow. The flow will find the path of least resistance. You’ve probably seen videos of the sneezes blowing out the sides of the masks:
