  1. It really is one of the saddest chapters in Portland’s storied history. First “Occupy” which was allowed to go way too far (and which cost 100’s of $1000’s to clean up and restore the parks, and now this.

Portland had the prettiest downtown of any large town; amazing number of bronze statues (incuding the beautiful elk fountain they destroyed), a central plaza area in the middle of their core retail area, and a very nice transit system that actually works! I honestly don’t know how Portland’s citizens could put up with this. It’s shameful.

  2. I WAS OPS OFFICER ON THE USS NEW JERSEY IN 1990, FIRST BATTLESHIP TO TRANSIT THE COLUMBIA RIVER TO PORTLAND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE JUNE ROSE FEST..IT WAS STILL KINDA GREAT, BUT EVEN THEN YOU COULD SEE THE SHIT COMING…SAD STORY!!!

  3. Portland has always been kind of rough. In the early 1970s it was a great place to go just to brawl. It toned down in the late 70s as the burnouts from Frisco and LA moved in. Early eighties not a job to be found… anywhere. Enter tech, and the non working upper middle class and the rest is recent history.

  4. We used to visit Portland and stay downtown and just walk around and shop. You couldn’t pay me to go there today. It was far worse in person than the video suggests and that was over five years ago when I said: Never again.

  5. Where .gov takes a big role in housing:
    – cheap housing is driven out by regulation, and maybe rent control (landlords quit fixing money-losing property)
    – the remaining cheap housing is upgraded to section 8 standards, and the rent is accordingly increased. But that’s ok, if you are a freeloader getting subsidized rent.
    – the remaining (connected?) landlords make a fortune off the .gov rent checks paying most of the rent real regular- they don’t much care for non-subsidized tenants.
    – the (D)irtbag politicians get kickbacks, bribes, highly motivated, guaranteed (D)umbcluck voters, and a surfeit of single moms who worship big .gov and all its workers.
    – repeat as needed for all sectors of the economy, and soon it’s : ~”all power within the party, none outside” ~(Mussolini)

  6. Here in dem/commie controlled Connecticut they want to pass a 1% “mansion” tax on all property valued at over $400,000, residential or business. They also want to pass a bill to give the State control over local zoning so that they can turn the whole of Connecticut into Hartford, Bridgeport and New Haven, all cities in decline. So as they say, Portland, hold our beers.

  7. I don’t enter any city unless it’s absolutely essential.
And towns over populations of about 15,000 are turning pretty crappy.
Seems like everywhere there’s a gathering of maggots things turn sordid.

Probably has something to do with pride (not the overweening pride of the run-of-the-mill maggot who gets a participation trophy but the pride of one who has done something well) and self-respect – but I’m not sure.

    Best to avoid them.
