Hope spacecraft spies solar system’s tallest volcano

The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) first-ever Mars spacecraft captured its most stunning image yet of the Red Planet as the probe continues preparing to begin its science observations in earnest.

The spacecraft, dubbed Hope, entered orbit around Mars on Feb. 9, marking the end of a seven-month trek from Earth and promising tantalizing science results to come about the Red Planet’s weather and atmosphere. But before Hope can begin that science work, it needs to adjust its orbit with two carefully choreographed moves, both of which will occur in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, the spacecraft has been testing its three instruments, including the 12-megapixel camera called the Emirates Exploration Imager, or EXI. That camera snapped a stunning image of the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons, on Feb. 26. At the time, the spacecraft was about 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers) above the planet’s surface, mission team members said. more

  1. Mars isn’t habitable, we are not going to colonize Mars. It’s 1/2 the size of earth, is hotter than Hades on one side of Mars and colder on the other side of Mars. The average recorded temperature on Mars is -81F. No water, not warm enough to grow crops, and 7 months to arrive at Mars from earth. We’re wasting our time and money exploring Mars to live there. We’re not getting off this planet to colonize another one–we’re doomed here, scientists need to deal with it. JMHO.

  2. A volcano that size may have greened that planet (with water) beyond comprehension while it was active. For how long (or if it came about), no one really knows yet.

However, there are clues already that can tell us what possibly went right or wrong.

Either we must explore further in more detail. or we shall never know.

Good luck, future astronauts, human explorers and science.

I am only here a few more years.

    GOOD LUCK and GOD SPEED!

While I do think that exploration (regardless of stated purpose) is wonderful and brings many unexpected benefits, until I see people lining up to buy condos on the Antarctic shelf, I’m with ya; we aren’t living there. The best day on Mars is vastly more hostile than the worst day anywhere on Earth.

  4. The Pic that comes up on space.com is a CARTOON. I am so sick of these false pictures. If their junk is really there, and actually taking pictures with a REAL high def camera, WHY are so many “Illustrations” in these articles “computer generated” or outright cartoons ? And never any background, never any stars. Never a true pic of Earth from anywhere. We see Mars from Earth as a bright red orb with our naked eye, visible disk. Now imagine how BRIGHT blue Earth would be from Mars! 1st, Earth is approx 2X reflective as Mars, and 2X diameter, and 2X closer to the sun. Earth should be a dazzling 8X bright blue disk visible from Mars. Sick of this BS.

  5. “The tallest of them all towers 16 miles (25 kilometers) above the surrounding plains and stretches across 374 miles (624 km) — roughly the size of the state of Arizona.”
