980-Foot Chinese Skyscraper Evacuated Due to Swaying

“The people in the building and downstairs fled for their lives!” read the caption to one of the Twitter clips, which depicts petrified shoppers stampeding across a plaza like scene out of a monster movie.

  1. Don’t tell me. When the building sways, it makes a *chink* sound.

No doubt designed by a highly touted Chinese architect who got a ‘C’ in dynamics and completely failed the ‘wind loading’ portion of the class.

  2. Meanwhile, weather reports clocked the local wind speed at 27 miles per hour, which is not nearly powerful enough to shake a building.

Incompetent architects. Tall buildings shouldn’t have resonant frequencies OR should have oscillation damping built-in.

If wind turbulence takes on a characteristic frequency the same as or close to the resonant frequency of the building, the wind can be quite mild yet still cause high amplitude swaying and ultimately structural failure. *CRASH!*

  3. That’s OK, when it falls down Walmart and Cosco will buy the debris and resale it to the US Military for replacement material (the big guy will get his cut)!

  4. This is the problem with the current crop of engineers; they depend on computers too much, and have no real-world experience to draw on. I remember a military flight instructor commenting about training Asians (Koreans). They always showed up on time, and could recite the manuals from memory, but had no initiative or instinct that enabled them to get out of situations that weren’t in the textbooks.

Had a friend who held the record where he was training the Koreans to fly and was having some difficulty doing it. Landings seemed to present a problem most often. THREE CRASHES IN ONE DAY! And survived to be found at the Officers Club pounding down martinis like water. Other WWII stories from him not so funny or pretty. Shot down and captured twice. Escaped once and the second capture was worse as he described (by our allies the Russians).

  6. Sounds like they stole USA architectural secrets which were intentionally flawed and the Chicoms were giddy that they one upped the USA. (My thinking has some conspiracy porn to it). 🙂
