Salsa-dancing LeBron James’s Mountain Dew ad draws ire: ‘My culture is not your prom dress’

BPR:

Mountain Dew’s new ad campaign, “The Morning Makes You,” featuring LeBron James salsa dancing is just the kind of promotion that the left usually labels as cultural appropriation.

The extended cut of the commercial features James doing everything from laundry to mowing the lawn, to salsa dancing. It was directed by F. Gary Gray and is for the Mountain Dew Rise Energy drink available in 16-fl. oz. cans which were launched in March.

James ended his 18-year partnership with Coke in 2020. Forbes estimates that James is one of the NBA’s top earners, pulling in an estimated $50 million a year in endorsements. He is now teaming up with Pepsi and Mountain Dew. read more

  1. Mowing the lawn and doing the laundry are also cultural appropriations, when you are one of the “elite” doing it. After all, that’s why they opened the border.

  2. Oh by the way, why is coca cola spending $$$$$$ on assholes when they’re the best known drink in the world? Plus they own OTHER brands now?
People on tiny islands in the middle of the Pacific know Coca Cola.
Starving children in Kenya are wearing vintage Coke t shirts. No pants, but they got that t shirt. Also, hillary in ’16 t shirts, but that’s not really the point. The point is, they don’t need to spend money on ads. They fucking own 94% of the market in soda and water.

  3. Pretty quick we won’t be buying anything because we’re boycotting everything. We all know that won’t work. What you can boycott is anything that takes a knee to America….oh wait, that’s about everything that’s name brand. Buy second hand, plenty of that around.

  4. MJ – The Guinness Open Gate Brewery is set to donate $1 million to the Black Lives Matter organisation as a part of a $20 million community fund set up by parent company Diageo (stated last year and I just find out).

Will never drink another Guinness again. Maybe a Yuengling Black and Tan will suffice…will get some this weekend.

  5. Eh. Well, I was only going to use it for bread anyway. lol.
Oh well, thanks for the info, Chuckie!

Any chance these companies will see they fucked up and offer a mea culpa? lol. I have noticed that some emails I get from the more Woke businesses don’t have BLM related crap on their sites anymore. The ‘donate to’ links have long gone.

  6. His worst offense in cultural appreciation would be pretending to read books. But there’s no such thing as cultural appropriation, so he’s just your garden variety racist asshole with too much money. If his ego weren’t so fragile, he’d have been on DWTS.

  7. When my Petey B was on ABC’s “Flouncing With The Stars,” he did the salsa dance and flounced his way into the final round. And no one was prouder of my Petey B’s flouncing than my unbleached elastic starfish!

I would not recommend second hand beer, I think that’s called Bud Dry, but it is not a good idea.

PK Wrigley was once asked this very question while on a train trip. His gum was displayed on just about every counter in America and had no competition when it came to brand recognition.

His answer: (not verbatim) It’s like the engine on this train, What would happen if you shut it down?
