Amtrak makes $7.3B investment in new trains from Siemens

FOX: Amtrak on Wednesday announced a $7.3 billion investment in new trains and infrastructure, promising to “transform the future of rail travel” in the U.S.

A new fleet of 83 trains – some of which will be hybrid-battery powered – will be manufactured by Siemens Mobility Inc. in California, a subsidiary of German conglomerate Siemens AG.

“These new trains will reshape the future of rail travel by replacing our aging 40-to-50-year old fleet with state-of-the-art, American-made equipment,” Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn said in a statement. “This investment is essential to preserving and growing our Northeast Regional and state-supported services and will allow our customers to travel comfortably and safely, while deeply reducing criteria pollutants.”

The taxpayer-subsidized railroad company said its new models will have more comfortable seating, and will feature amenities like onboard Wi-Fi service, individual power outlets and USB ports, as well as touchless restroom controls. more here

  1. Just how in the hell are they going to power these electric hybrid trains? This is a totally dumbshit idea, but what else would I expect from the moron who is supposedly in charge of the country. They will have to have massive charging stations every 50-100 miles in order to provide electricity for this fiasco and where will the power come from. And now if you take the train you can expect it to take 2 to 3 weeks or longer to travel cross the country from the East coast to the left coast. And what about trying to keep any service going in our brutal Northern Winters across the Great plains and Rocky mountains and deserts of the South West? It’s going to be quicker to walk across the country. Electric trains may work OK for model and toy trains but not in real life. DUMBASSSES!

  2. We HAD an extensive, nationwide rail travel system once.

The reason we don’t any more is because we moved out away from rail hubs when better individual transport was invented.

Rail like that doesn’t exist now because it doesn’t make sense any more.

Democrats only want mass transit because that way, THEY can control where you go, when you can go there, how long you can stay there, and monitor your movements at all times.

Communism only has a CHANCE of working if you can force the pawns to stay where they’re put, and you can’t do that with cars and motorcycles, only with mass transit.

That also forces your peons to stay in the cities where they can be heavily taxed, heavily policed, subject to Antifa and BLM brownshirts, and limited to work and live only where you will take them to work and live, and easy to disarm and watch all the time.

    …that’s why Democrats want trains.

    Its about control.

EVERYTHING is about control, to a Communist…

  3. 19 state legislatures gave Amtrak a total of $234 million in 2019.
In 2018 The federal government shelled out nearly 2 $Billion dollars.
The federal legislators will provide $19 billion over five years, for an average of $3.8 billion per year.

Amtrak itself has put out a “corridor vision” that calls for $75 billion in funding over the next 15 years.

President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Plan, meanwhile, would devote $80 billion over eight years to the company, or $50 billion over the next five.

Amtrak’s biggest lie is that passenger trains are somehow vital to the nation’s economy. Last year, Americans traveled an average of 15,000 miles by automobile, 2,100 miles by plane, and 1,100 miles by bus. Amtrak’s contribution was less than 20 miles per person. Even in the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak reluctantly admits that it carries only 6% of intercity travelers.

AMTRAC is the NPR of Transportation. If it weren’t for federal subsidies (our tax dollars), it would go belly up into bankruptcy.
    More good money after bad.

  4. AMTRAK’s another gov’t scam.
It’s a way to prop up the RR Unions and the politicians take a skim off the top.
Doesn’t have the ridership to make it profitable, and EVERYBODY knows it.

It was never meant to be anything other than a cash cow for the connected.

  5. Last time I rode an Amtrak was the Auto Train about 20 years ago. The tracks were so rough we got tossed about the cabin and couldn’t sleep for anything. If they haven’t fixed the tracks it won’t matter what kind of trains they put on them…
