Georgia: Buckhead district one step closer to leaving Atlanta

WaEx: One of Atlanta’s wealthiest and whitest enclaves got one step closer Thursday to forming its own city after a contentious three-hour hearing before a state Senate committee.

Supporters and opponents of the creation of Buckhead City traded jabs about the motives behind the push to leave Atlanta. Supporters say the streets of Buckhead have become a playground for lawless behavior, while opponents claim Buckhead’s true motivations are race-based and argue stripping Atlanta of the tax revenue generated by Buckhead would bring Georgia’s largest city to its knees.

State Sen. Brandon Beach, a Republican from Alpharetta, and 12 of his GOP colleagues, none of whom represent Buckhead, have been the driving legislative force behind the city separation.

Beach, a 60-year-old staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, started his testimony following a six-minute video montage of crimes committed in Buckhead over the past 18 months, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. “That video clearly shows crime is the issue that’s really resonated and brought this issue to the forefront in the creation of a new city of Buckhead,” he told members of the Senate State and Local Government Committee. “It’s unacceptable. We must get control of crime. And if we don’t, we won’t have a Buckhead.” More

  1. It is a queer couple that is leading this effort. They are promising things they cannot deliver. Currently Buckhead has the support of 370 Atlanta police officers. The proposal is that 250 law enforcement officers will protect them of he city of Buckhead goes through. FYI: you couldn’t pay me to be out at night in Buckhead right now. The jackwads leading this are not from Atanta but from the NE.

  2. Sorry, Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, you all rode MARTA to your imminent destruction. For the sake of btevity and sticking to the point, i will not address the foibles of Cobb, Cherokee or Gwinnett counties.

Buckheaf, you will not solve your crime problem by creating your own city. Demographics are overwhelming you.Even Roswell and Alpharetta, seemingly safe across the Chattahoochee River, are destined for the blight. The tide is pushing north, farther every year, and it shows no sign of ebbing.

I salute you, Brandon Beach. I have watched you rise for many years, first as I raised my children in Roswell and then as I made a tactical retreat to Milton. You’re a fighter, and I salute you.

But I was born in Atlanta, and I grew up in Decal County, and I have watched the decay as it occurred around me. I am an old school Brookhaven boy. i fought the surge in the 90’s , and what I see coming north is all too familiar.

You will not save Buckhead with legislation. The lotds of Buckhead enthusiastically embraced their own destruction many decades ago. I will end this screed with a prediction: If Buckhead ever becomes a city, within five years, it will have a black democrat mayor.

No they’re not. They may be one step closer to separating Buckhead govt from Atlanta govt but pretending they’re not part of Atlanta in all other respects is wishful thinking. And it’s those other respects that really count.

In other words, they can play all the paperwork games they want but they’re still fscked.

  4. “… opponents claim Buckhead’s true motivations are race-based and argue stripping Atlanta of the tax revenue generated by Buckhead …”

Aren’t those sufficient reasons for an amicable divorce?
If Atlanta would collapse (economically) with the withdrawal of Buckhead, then Buckhead is carrying far too much of the tax burden! QED. Ipso Facto. Whomp – dere it is!
Buckhead should scream “You’re damned right! Fuck off, you parasites!” and declare independence.
