LeDuff: Yikes, Who Can Afford Thanksgiving?

Charlie LeDuff| Deadline Detroit:
I like to tell people how, during the holidays, my mother would let my brothers and sister and me to lick pie batter from the beaters.

She would allow this only so long as the beaters were left plugged into the electric mixer and the electric mixer was left plugged into the wall socket.

A hard lesson, but it taught us caution and moderation, I tell people. It taught us that gluttony and extravagance are sins.

It’s just a story I like to tell hayseeds from the East Coast who say they don’t understand Midwestern way of life. The actual and more boring version is that my mother taught us to work hard and save our money, and I’ve tried. But these days when I wake up, I’m told that the money I’ve earned is not worth what it was yesterday when I earned it.

It’s gotten so bad people are investing in a box of air that doesn’t even come with a box. more

  1. I’d have to do some reading up on history to be sure. However, I’m still pretty sure every economy that experienced hyperinflation had people in charge use words similar to “transitory” to explain the beginning stages.

  2. Yeah, well, get a trouble on an ADAS and not even know what an ADAS is. It is not in COSMOS, it is not in TIRKS. Not in any BSP.

Who can afford an ADAS trouble?

Sorry, I’m making an ADAS joke.

  3. Interesting article and pretty accurate up until he bashed Trump’s policies with the liberal lie that only the rich benefited economically while Trump was president.

  4. Yeah, fate.
The political parties aren’t competing mafias, they’re two branches of the same mafia. There’s complete agreement between them. Divide and Despoil. Steal whatever isn’t nailed down – and then crowbar it up and steal it.
Governments tend towards centralization and organizations tend towards rot.
That’s just the way it is – or appears to be.
Thus, we’re left with a centralized, rotten, edifice that only serves the interests of the maggots who are in positions to manipulate it. They occupy those positions legitimately (once) by lying through their teeth and then through hook and crook.

“Every country has the government it deserves.”

  5. The bureaucracy is really the only constant.
    This guy sounds confused.
He doesn’t like what the Dirty Dems are doing.
But didn’t like the prosperity under Trump and lies about it.
We benefited from the tax cuts. Not a ton but enough to pay the electric bill all year.
He seems ignorant of the fact that pensions, 401k’s and such are invested in the stock market and so the average American’s retirement funds did great under Trump.
    Calls establishment GOP conservative.
    Sloppy.

    Signed,
An East Coast hayseed you think doesn’t know what hard work is.

Reading that headline, makes me go back to my early childhood when I would hear on the evening news “Thanksgiving will be hard for millions of people who will go hungry this Thanksgiving.” Let’s just say that I’ve been hearing it for over 60 years. Yet, I never heard of anyone dying from starvation on Thanksgiving day or the day after. The SA bell-ringers all look fat and happy.

  7. All my 3 kids and 5 grandchildren will be here for Thanksgiving this week. My daughter and son in law adn 2 granddaughters are currently driving thru Iowa and S Dakota after spending the night in Omaha on their way from Nashville and will spend the night in Gillette, Wyoming and up to Billings, Montana tomorrow across 1- 90 to Spokane. It will be the first time we’ve all been together in quite a while for Thanksgiving and will be a good week and we’re all going to chip in together and pay for and help with the cooking for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. They chose to drive because of the bs regulations requiring that little kids ages 4 and 2 have to wear masks in order to fly and it’s cheaper to drive for 2 days as well.
