  1. He was intelligent & well spoken and I have to assume he had contempt for modern black men & women.

I saw a black guy in the park yesterday with his two young daughters.
    Good right?
Then I noticed his pants hanging down below his ass.
Oh well, gotta represent “the culture” I suppose?

  2. Lilies of the Field is arguably my favorite movie.

While I figure he was a liberal, he did not act as though his position made his opinion any more important than ours.

I understand that death is a part of life so generally just accept the deaths of famous people. The death of Mr. Poitier, however, makes me say, “Damn.”

  3. Okay, to add a little levity and irreverence to this obituary, I will say that I didn’t like his Dr. Pepper knock-off movie, “They Call Me Mr. Pibb”.

Other than that, I greatly respected the man’s body of work.

  4. Sidney Poitier, a decent, smart, handsome, intellectual, dignified gentleman – a man of honorable intent.

Yes, he was liberal, a Hollywood insider and had a messy private life. However, he did portray highly principled black men in his movies. He knew how to be an excellent role model.

My favorite Poitier movies; “Lillies of the Field” and “To Sir With Love” – adore that film.

In general, his characters were individuals to admire and emulate – what the majority of black American men used to be.

I highly respected him as a teen – he and Dianne Caroll. They were awesome, incredible actors.
Sad that Mr. Poitier has passed – so has a grand era.

  5. He was great in “Shoot To Kill”. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend that you do. Wall to wall action. Had Tom Berenger & Kirsty Alley in it, as well. Probably not one of Sidney Poitier’s better known movies, but it is a true cliffhanger in more than one way! Very smart & clever plot, too!
