Apple facial recognition now works with masks, expanding privacy issues

Just The News: Apple iPhone users who routinely wear masks will soon find it easier to unlock their devices and use its payment service, but not without a privacy cost.

The iOS 15.4 beta, which currently works only on newer iPhone models, tweaks its facial recognition feature to recognize owners wearing masks by “authenticating the unique features around your eyes,” CNET reports.

Owners previously needed to also have an Apple Watch to unlock their phones while masked, under a tweak the company issued last spring.

The Verge says that while Apple immediately asks users installing the iOS 15.4 beta if they want to enable masked recognition, the company also warns that it’s not as accurate as full-face recognition. read more

    We both need help.

Last major snow storm i was up on a ladder shovelling the roof. My wife wanted to take a picture.
So when she wasn’t looking i unzipped & pulled out the torpedo.
She too a picture of me standing on the roof, holding the shovel like a hockey stick and the torpedo half hanging out of the zipper.
She still has about 5 pics on her phone & hasn’t noticed yet.
Lately she has been cycling different pics in a digital picture frame in the living room.

My son and & have kept our mouths shut and are going to get her to put one of them in rotation.

Seriously, Its the Freon & Winter that make us Canuck HVAC guys Really fucked up.

Poor girl has been putting up with me since 1993.

  4. This is the reason that I don’t buy new phones with the new, more invasive, technology.
Beachmom- what phone are you using?
How about everyone else? Aside from a non “smart” phone, what are the options?

  5. I don’t actually have anything on my phone that is confidential. But then again, I don’t really use my phone for much other than making and receiving calls and the occasional text. A few people (i.e. my wife) get pissed because I frequently leave it at home.

Still, I am grateful for Apple’s facial recognition technology. It typically takes 2.5 seconds to unlock my iPhone with a passcode, and I just don’t have all day to wait around unlocking a devise I use about 20 minutes a day.
