Effort underway to slaughter, hunt or relocate 900 Yellowstone bison

NYP: More than three dozen bison from Yellowstone National Park migrating toward Montana were captured in recent days, as officials began an effort to reduce the park’s herd by up to 900 animals.

Twenty-seven of the bison were sent to Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, where they will be slaughtered for food, Yellowstone bison coordinator Tim Reid told the Associated Press on Thursday.

Federal, tribal and state officials announced late last year a plan to reduce the park’s 5,000 bison in an effort to stop the spread of Brucellosis, a bacterial disease that can cause cows to abort their calves. The disease can spread to humans but is rare in the US, the report states. more

  1. Wait. They will slaughter possibly healthy bison to stop the spread of a bacteria that forces spontaneous abortions in bison? Couldn’t this possibly leave inflicted bison alive to continue to spread the disease? What kind of convoluted logic is this?

  2. The only way it seems to eradicate the disease is to innoculate the herds, but then they would not be entirely wild animals.

It’s a shame that D.C. has completely despoiled every agency in gov’t and caused us to look askance at all of them.

  4. My wife and I enjoyed the buffalo when we visited Yellowstone about a decade ago during the week before Memorial Day. One morning we were looking at Old Faithful through an Old Faithful Lodge cafeteria window when a bison took a leisurely stroll through the people who were waiting outside for the geiser to erupt. Thankfully, no mayhem ensued.

When our trip ended on Friday, we were driving out of the park as the first summer horde of tourists were driving in whilst sharing their lane of the road with buffalo that were also wandering into the park. Said buffalo looked to be walking about a mile an hour or less.
