Woke Starbucks To Phase Out Disposable Cups For Nasty Reusable Ones

PJM: Could the end of Starbucks’ iconic coffee cups be near? In 2018, Starbucks announced it was developing a recyclable, compostable cup. I guess that plan didn’t work out so well because on Tuesday, Starbucks announced it plans to phase out disposable cups in favor of reusable ones.

The transition will happen over the next three years because of sustainability and environmentalism … and garden variety wokeness.

“Our cup is ubiquitous, and we love that,” said Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer. “But it is also this ubiquitous symbol of a throwaway society.”

“By 2025, the company wants every customer to be able to either use their own mug easily or borrow a ceramic or reusable to-go mug from their local Starbucks. That could mean rolling out more borrow-a-mug programs that require a deposit,” reports CNN Business. “Starbucks is also planning, by the end of next year, to let customers use their own personal mugs at every Starbucks in the United States and Canada, even if they order ahead or use the drive-thru.” read more

  1. Will the price drop since people will be using their own cups? This isn’t about saving the environment. This is about increasing their profits by reducing overhead.
I compare this to self checkout lines.
Do I get a discount for checking out myself since I did the work and you don’t have to pay for a cashier?

  2. Wondering about that myself.
Usually when I bring my own cup to a coffee place, there’s a small “discount” (the cost of the store’s disposable cup).
My Tervis cup is better, anyway. Double wall, insulated, retains heat longer.
So, what about it, StarF**ks? Discount for bringing your own cup?

  3. …so, a liberal bedwetting booger eater wipes his slime on the cup and hands it to the barista, who getz his juices on her hand and on the tap before handing it back to him, minus whatever drool and pubic hair that bsckwashed out of his teeth and foamed over the top of the mucho macho latte and stuck to the nozzle.

Then she grabs YOUR cup and loosens that pubic hair into YOUR cup, while the slime from the last guy smears across the contact surfaces of yours.

    Sound about right?

…guess Starbucks doesn’t beliwve in COOF any more if they’re going to cross-contaminate all their customers and employees like that…

  4. What am I missing about paper coffee cups not being recyclable? I think it’s a money making scheme.

In WA now (maybe it’s just King Co.) you have to pay 8 cents for a plastic or paper bag. You have to bring your own grocery sacks. Buy too much, fine I’ll pay for a stupid bag. The 8 cent bag sometimes can be used again, sometimes not.

People will forget their personal cups or be not want to reuse someone else’s (!!!) and will happily pay a green fee for a formerly free cup. That’s my 8 cents in this subject! 😂

  5. I have purchased 2 Starbutt coffee mugs – one from Honolulu, and the other from Paris. Bought only because they are huge and I make lattes that fit nicely in them…bought them at thrift stores for $2. Other than that, Starbutts will be losing customers fast – not only through inflation and people’s purchasing power is limited, they’ll be cutting hours nationwide soon. I’m predicting a backlash.

  6. @Illustr8r: We4 pay 10 cents per plqas6tic bags. When the pandemic hit, we weren’t allowed to bring our own bags because they were “contaminated.” So WalMart was out of bags the other day. The checker said “bring your own bags.” I told her “NO! They’re contaminated remember? Do you want to handle contaminated bags?” I rather enjoyed that bit of in your face back at you conversation. She diudn;t know what to say. I then told her I won’t be buying any of the stuff I shopped for since you don’t have any “clean” bags.

  8. Starbucks….I have never figured out the logo. She is obviously a mermaid, but I don’t understand why she has two tails, one on each side. In my observations of mermaids over the decades, I swear I have never seen one with two tails.

It’s a big question for me. Someone help before I breath my last breath without ever finding out the mystery of the Starbucks mermaid with two tails.

  9. FYI @TimBukTu

The Meaning Behind Starbuck’s Famous Logo Design
As an inspiration, he sorted out old marine books and based the two-tailed siren design off of a 16th century Norse woodcut. For many years, this siren was mistaken for being a mermaid, yet it was later confirmed that the symbol was, in fact, a siren.
