Republic Brief: Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas is the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA swimming title – his controversial victory has received mixed reviews.
The 22-year-old University of Pennsylvania swimmer won the 500-yard freestyle event in Atlanta on Thursday evening in a time of 4 minutes, 33.24 seconds.
The crowd was significantly more excited when it came time to cheer for the real woman coming in second place, Emma Weyant, of the University of Virginia. The time she clocked was 4:34.99.
