The Food and Drug Administration is planning to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes. The proposed ban was announced by FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf during a Senate committee hearing. He said that the ban would “improve the health and reduce the mortality risk of current smokers of menthol cigarettes or flavored cigars by substantially decreasing their consumption and increasing the likelihood of cessation.”
The FDA said that an estimated 18.6 million people smoke menthols, accounting for 36% of all smokers in the United States. African Americans make up a disproportionate amount of menthol smokers. The FDA said that 85% of Black smokers use menthols, compared to 30% of White smokers. more
A pack of B&H menthol 100s back when I was in 6th grade cured me of any desire to smoke cigarettes for the rest of my life.

Never tried smoking, but this is ludicrous– menthol cigarettes are banned but marijuana is legal.

I knew there had to be a racial angle to this once I read the headlines. Hey FDA,the same percentage of blacks vote Democrat and look at the destruction the Dems have caused black community. Why not ban the Dem party?

…somehow, when the Founders wrote that the Federal Government should “promote the general welfare”, they didn’t mean having sweeping powers to ban everything and anything down to and including certain blends of tobacco.
Menthol has a negative effect on covid.

Not the menthol, but nicotine may help prevent COVID.
Banning menthol would insure more black people get covid.

I remember on an operation in 1968 our Marine Company got resupply before moving to our next area of engagement and when I went to secure share of the supplies for the C.P. I found several black Marines standing around the shipment and they were NOT happy. I asked what was going on and one of them said…”Damn Doc, they ain’t got no KOOLS or any menthol’s!” Then I realized there weren’t any filter cigarettes at all. That shipment was left over from WWII when I saw a carton of Lucky Strike in a green package!
I can see the FDA being hunted down and shot!

First cig I ever had was a KOOL Mild. I was 11. Smoked menthols on and off until graduating high school – Newports, Salems.
I had a black co-worker when I was 19 and he smoked KOOLs. I asked him one day (back when it wasn’t an offense to ask such a question), “hey man, why do black people always smoke KOOLs?” He paused and said “cuz we smoke what we are!”

I’m beyond glad I stopped smoking decades ago but for many years on every cross country trip I made to deliver work to my clients, a pack of Kool Milds were riding the dash with me.
