A Gallon of Gas Now Costs More Than the Federal Minimum Wage in These US Cities

FEE

As nearly 40 million Americans prepare to travel for Memorial Day weekend, they’re confronted with an unpleasant reality: gasoline prices are through the roof.

Last week, for the first time ever, gas prices topped $4 in every single state. On Wednesday, Florida hit a new record high—$4.57 a gallon. That’s a lot, but it pales in comparison to California, where the average price per gallon was $6.06 as of Monday. In some parts of the Golden State, however, prices are even much higher.

A CBS News article published Tuesday pointed out that the price of a gallon of gas at many California service stations was higher than the federal minimum wage. According to GasBuddy, the following locations were $7.25+.

  1. I believe this is also the first time in history the national average price of gasoline is higher than the value of a US silver quarter, currently at 4 bucks. Although you can’t really purchase a silver quarter for less than 6 bucks right now, so there’s that. Everywhere you look there’s a disconnect from reality, it’s all fake and gay.

  2. I resent those PM premiums. I’ve done a half dozen sales/buys with silver and deal with my customers at spot. The only reason for them is because of the true price is being held down by a tsunami of shorts our financial institutions, fed by the Fed, has flooded the market with shorts on silver(or gold).

The spot price is wildly inaccurate because it’s counting paper PMs. If people trading these shorts started demanding to have the actual metal, around 1 in 100 ounces could be produced. When that scarcity became widely acknowledged, the spot price would leap.

Now it’s around $24/oz, with the nightmare we’re in the middle of, it should be nudging $4-500.

  3. We read that story and think “the price of gas is too damn high”. Your typical progressive reads that story and thinks “the minimum wage is too damn low”. Guess which result MSNBC was aiming for.
