Drinking coffee tied to lower risk of dying: New research shows

Wa Examiner:

One’s morning cup of coffee being dubbed a “life line” of sorts may be more than just a cliche or joke because a new study published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that those who drink coffee, even with a teaspoon of sugar, may be 30% less likely to die.

“Moderate consumption of unsweetened and sugar-sweetened coffee was associated with lower risk for death,” the researchers concluded.

Over a period of seven years, the study compared those who do not drink coffee with those who consume 1.5 to 4.5 cups of coffee that is unsweetened, artificially sweetened, and sugar-sweetened.

The researchers showed that people who drank unsweetened coffee were 16-21% less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with noncoffee drinkers. more

  1. And those who interrupt a coffee drinker’s first cup of the day are more likely to die a VERY early death, compared to those who DON’T interrupt.

  2. ““Moderate consumption of unsweetened and sugar-sweetened coffee was associated with lower risk for death,” the researchers concluded.” Last time I checked, the risk of death was still 100%, it’s just a question of when. Whoever wrote this is a poor writer..

  3. Aaaaand, Sippin’ Coffee was not available for comment because he was busy – drinking coffee!

Now, what about people who drink MORE than 4.5 cups? And how big is a cup?

I may have a problem. Longevity runs in my family and I’m not sure I want to live to 99 with coffee dribbling down my chin with a blank stare on my face.

  4. It’s an even year; so all coffee studies will conclude that coffee is good for you. Next year, it will go back to claiming coffee causes rectal cancer and contributes to global warming.

My personal experience is that without a good, steaming hot cup of black, unsweetened joe, my mornings would be 30% shittier, and that could add up over time.

  5. Ha, General! I was past the sippin’ part of the day and out and about when this posted.

As others have suggested: what is the “benefit” of continuous coffee consumption? Being an even year, it is on the okay it doesn’t dehydrate you list…

    Yay “Science(R)”!

  6. How do they know that not drinking coffee lower your risk of dying? I don’t drink much coffee and I’m going to die anyway sooner or later so why does it matter how much coffee I might or might not drink. And like Rush used to say, everyone who ever ate a carrot will die. There is no provable correlation.

    > Seems oddly non-specific. I guess this is what passes for science now.

    It’s what, pridely, self-identifies as Science(TM)!
