As national gas prices hit a record high, New York drivers will get a little reprieve as the state’s gas tax suspension takes effect Wednesday, lasting through the rest of the year.
The national average for a gallon of gas jumped five cents overnight to $4.67, marking AAA’s highest recorded average price. New York’s average price hit $4.93 a gallon Wednesday, according to AAA — a 60% hike compared to last year’s price tag of $3.08 per gallon.
New York lawmakers passed the suspension of the state’s 16-cent-per-gallon motor fuel and sales tax as part of the state’s budget in April.
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said the state gas tax suspension will run through Dec. 31 and cost the state $585 million. more

Washington State charges 49.5 cents per gallon gas tax. Our governor has said he will not cut or suspend the gas tax because the oil companies will just raise it.
Illinois is suspending it’s “automatic” gas tax hike for 6 months, and made it law that you know how awesome your elected officials are for “saving” you 2.2 cents a gallon (39.2 vs 41.4 cents) by forcing gas stations to post a 4×6 sign at all pumps: “As of July 1, 2022, the State of Illinois has suspended the inflation adjustment to the motor fuel tax through December 31, 2022. The price on this pump should reflect the suspension of the tax increase.”
Gas stations that fail to post the notice could be liable for up to $500 in fines a day.
Oh, and they are also suspending a 1% food tax and the same bullshit statement needs to be printed on receipts and posted in stores.

The calculating and sly “NY lawmakers” only reason for engaging this is that they know full well there are multiple thousands LESS NYers, all who have fled the city and state. The only ones still around the no-tourists decrepit shhhyt hole of NY are the homeless and street gangs—all with no vehicles or licenses to speak of.
