Republicans Should Slowly Back Away From Ukraine

American Spectator:
This is not an anti-Ukraine column and it certainly isn’t a pro-Russia column. What it really amounts to is a pro-life column, and particularly a pro-American people column.

And it begins with a recognition that the majority of Americans are pro-Ukraine. Most surveys show that as a people we are disgusted by Russia’s invasion of its neighbor and the atrocities committed there, and most of us want the Ukrainians to win that war.

Most of us would also like to see a world where Russia was run by someone less conniving, less brutal, and more interested in cooperation with the rest of Europe than Vladimir Putin. It’s pretty clear that he’s the bad guy here. For whatever provocations might have been dangled in front of his face, and there have surely been some, launching an offensive war against a sovereign country was a far more savage response than could ever have been warranted.

So all of that has been said. But as the last column in this space noted, this Russia–Ukraine war has outlived its usefulness, and it’s going to become an albatross around the necks of its supporters. Some of those people are Republicans, and they’re going to need to quietly back away from the unquestioning support with billions of dollars we don’t have for the meat grinder in Eastern Europe.

Yes, we want Ukraine to win. What does that look like? Apparently, according to Joe Biden — echoed now by the uber-predictable warmonger John Bolton — the Washington establishment is committed to the idea that winning the Russia–Ukraine war entails regime change in Moscow. more here

  1. I should have been more specific and said I support the people, not the regime.
But it is an issue that affects the Europeans and their responsibility not ours. We have our own problems to deal with on our own Continent.

  2. I’m pro-Ukraine and I want Putin to kick Zelensky’s ass out of there. I’d also be happy if he’d knock Pudding Cup out of D.C. and erect a glass factory over the Swamp. I also hate Putin, but not as much as the FED-allied globalists in London, Brussels and Bonn who are second to our own traitors from all parties. Other than all of that, I’m a peace-loving guy and please have a lovely day while you drop dead after getting a COVID vax.

  3. I look at it as:
    Ukraine bad, Russia badder.
Two crime bosses having a turf war.
We need to back away. FAAAAAR away.
But under Xiden, we know that ain’t gonna happen.
I can only pray that if Putin decides to launch, he aims for the blue Left coast cities; New Yawk, Albany, Baltimore, Mordor-on-the-Potomac. Maybe with a good tail wind, Putin could hit ShitCongo.

  4. Like every country, the question is support for the people vs. support for the government. Trump always supported the people of every country, as do I (although of course individuals may lose my support based upon their actions).
In Ukraine’s case, I have seen plenty of evidence that Zelensky was installed as a puppet of 0bama + WEF regime, for whatever activities would generate benefit to them. Lots of evidence that the war was created by this group, at least as much fault as Putin. I just saw video of Lindsey Graham and John McCain in 2016 talking about war starting there… until Trump got elected.
In every case of war more than 90% of those involved are innocent and powerless to do much about it. The real question is whether we should support those promoting it.

  5. The Federal Government is going about Ukraine the same way the Federal Government started out with Viet-Nam. What the government is doing needs to come to an abrupt halt before a small group of fools, once again, bumbles this this country into a major conflict that we can ill afford to get into.

  6. PRO Putin/Donny lovers. Any/ALL Donny/MAGA never every supported the Ukraine. Your love of totarianism dictators comes 1st & foremost. Kimmy & Putin make Donny cum in his shorts.

  7. I always wonder why our demonrats and rinos….
want to support the nazis of Ukraine….
instead of the communists in Russia….????

Oh crap….I forgot the communists lost Russia in 1991.

  8. The Ukraine conflict isn’t a war – it’s a struggle for who gets to launder the criminal money.
Zelenskyy wants to be top dog. Putin wants to be top dog. Top dog gets his cut.
Biden, et al, need to launder the $Billions stolen from the American taxpayers through graft, corruption, the arms industry, and Big Pharma.

Other than that, it’s all bullshit.

  9. On day one of this shit it was absolutely undeniable that The Party was all in for the Ukraine. That includes the Republican establishment and by that time anyone who was paying attention already recognized that the Ukraine acted as The Party’s One Stop Money Laundering Shop.

Ain’t gonna happen. That’s who has been buttering their bread.

  10. Knowing the corrupt Ukrainians were in bed with the Biden Crime Family tells me all I need to know. Cut em all off. How much Ukranian war money was laundered back to Bidens?

  11. It’s great sport to make fun of The Big Guy getting his 10%. If you don’t think that the likes of Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy haven’t been getting getting their cut, you are pretty slow on the uptake.

This kind of shit demands having having friends across the aisle to keep the whole scheme going. The mafia wouldn’t be able to get away with a damn thing we’re it not for the connections they have within the “opposing side”.

  12. I don’t want the Ukraine to win. If they do, we, the people of the West, lose. Zelensky is a CIA prop, a filthy disgusting pervert. The Russians in the South of Ukraine had their say–they want Russia. I bet their election integrity is better than ours, so I won’t doubt that outcome. Exactly what right does the US government or Americans have to interfere in the Ukraine? We have ZERO historical, linguistic, or cultural connection BUT Russia does. I don’t have the energy to waste on a country so far removed from me. With that, I don’t care about North Korea, Syria, Zimbabwe, or Ecuador either. I do, however, care about Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, and other states that still have some attachment to God (that leaves out the West Coast and much of the East). Of the two, Putin is far closer to Christ than the color revolution puppet, Zelensky. Finally, !@#$ what the “majority” of Americans feel or say. They were wrong on Covid. They were wrong on the Pfizer poison. They are wrong on this one too.

  13. Amen, Claudia. You summarize the issue perfectly.
Also, The Ukrainian government, a criminal enterprise is grifting the West. The Russian government is acting on paranoia/fear of losing grip on territory.
Trust shouldn’t even be a considered an option for either of these bad actors. They both can be triggered to help *Joe and company start a war.
Cutting off their financial incentives discourages territorial conflicts and involvement of the West.

  14. Does anyone really believe they are going to force violent regime change in the world’s #2 nuclear military power? Any studies on how that has been working out in other countries?

  15. @Soldieron

“The Russians in the South of Ukraine had their say–they want Russia” That’s my belief also. Few governments are willing to give up any land it rules over…because the land is where the wealth is, so that part is understandable from the Ukranian perspective.

Where an exit worked peacefully, as far as I know, was when the Slovaks split from the Czechs a couple of decades ago. For some reason, the west, instead of staying out of the current conflict, is on Ukraine’s side, to the detriment of the Russians living in Ukraine.

Disputes over land are usually settled by armed conflict. And so is this one.

  16. “And it begins with a recognition that the majority of Americans are pro-Ukraine.”

I’m not even sure that’s true anymore, if it ever was at all. Maybe it’s just that our years of being marinated in Trumprussiacollusion bullshit by the Uniparty, the fellating mockingbird media and dickbag trolls like Mitch up there has made everybody say that they believe in the sacred Ukraine like they believe in the Science, just to make the noise go away. It doesn’t matter what we think, so we just tell them what we think they want to hear.

We’re all in this together in this time of war and stuff, alright? Now leave me the fuck alone —MITCH—and go do whatever stupid shit you’re going to do, be it boosting Zelensky or another booster for you. I can’t help you and I won’t bother trying.
