Brittney Griner loses appeal in Russian court

Yahoo

If Brittney Griner is going to return to the U.S. anytime soon, it almost certainly will happen via a prisoner exchange.

The jailed American basketball star exhausted the last of her legal options on Tuesday when her last-gasp appeal predictably went nowhere.

A Moscow regional court upheld Griner’s August conviction on charges of drug possession and drug smuggling with criminal intent. The court rejected arguments from Griner’s defense attorneys that her nine-year prison sentence was excessive and unjustified under Russian law.

Griner participated in Tuesday’s appeal hearing via video call from behind the white bars of her jail cell at a detention center outside Moscow. That is where she has been held since last February when she flew into Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport and Russian customs police allegedly found vape cartridges in her luggage containing less than one gram of cannabis oil.

At the end of Tuesday’s hearing, Griner spoke directly to the court. Calling it “traumatic” to be away from her family, Griner begged the court to take into account what went “overlooked” during her first court date and to “reassess her sentence.” more

  1. Why does she(?) want to come back here? She said she hated the US.
She got her wish, she doesn’t have to deal with the US or any of us whiteys that still love and have hope for our country.

What went overlooked was the fact that she hates the United States and took every opportunity to publicly express that hatred. The reassessment of her sentence should be to keep her in Russia for life.

  3. Well ain’t that a shame? It made its’ fortune in a competitive, free market Capitalism economic system then openly despised the source of its income. Oh well. Oh, and FJB.

  4. Well, how to unpack this article…

First, since she spoke frome behing the white bars of her cell, does that make it “white oppression”? If so, then does Ivan care?

Secondly, since the zec has been convicted, can we drop the “allegedly” now? Done deal, accepted by a court of law, now a fact. Stop trying to make a martyr of Griner.

“Bet she’d be thrilled to stand for the national anthem now.”

…these people never accept blame or admit they are wrong. Its America’s fault for not going to war with Russia over racism, or something equally stupid like that. No lesson will be learned and it will come back in a few years with a fresh load of hate for whatever is left of the US.

  6. Why does anyone care what happens to her? She hates the United States and broke the law in another nation. She’s a grown…ah.. woman and should know what she’s doing. Because he she is an athlete doesn’t give he her license to break laws.
