MAMMOTH LAKES, California — Since the start of the winter season on November 2nd, Mammoth Lakes, California has received 375” of snow. In just the past week, since January 9th, the town has been inundated with 119” of snow. That’s nearly ten feet of snow burying the resort town. President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for California due to the amount of rain and snow hitting the state all at once.
While Mammoth Lakes is used to winter weather, we asked a local student, Colton Goetz, about how schools were impacted this week with all this snow. Goetz said, “I do not normally miss school. But this time we had three red days in a row,” meaning he missed three days of school in a row this week. He continued to say, “which is the most we had in 30 years. Which is pretty impressive.”
All the snow meant a lot of work as well. Goetz, a native here in Mammoth, and his uncle spent hours digging out a decent spot in the backyard for their dogs sometimes twice a day as the snow kept barreling down. more
They have all my sympathy. We had to shovel about three inches of global warming off our driveway this week.
And some people are asking the tough question – Where are the new reservoirs to collect this precious H2O? The gubmint has known for decades there was a need but didn’t do anything about it.
Last Saturday we watched our swimming pool go from the bottom of the tile to over flowing over the top in about 15 minutes, not once, but three times through out the day. That’s about 4 inches of rain fall in 15 minutes. We were draining the pool while this was going on.
Where’s all this water going? Straight out to sea. It’s the middle of the rain season and most of California is at 275% of normal. Snow Pack is off the charts.
