Houston: Small business owners sleep armed inside their businesses as break-ins skyrocket

PM: On Wednesday, a group of Houston-based small business owners went to their city council meeting to demand action on crime’s impact on their businesses.

According to Fox News, Star Sailor restaurant and bar owner Marin Slanina told the council, “It’s definitely not a neighborhood-exclusive thing. The City of Houston as a whole has a problem with burglaries, thefts, and break-ins.”

“It’s scary,” Slanina added. “It’s not comfortable. We know we have to do something bigger as a whole to change what’s going on in our small businesses.”

According to Slanina, Star Sailor was burglarized two times in May over the span of two days and there have been no arrests in the crime.

Slanina joined Fox & Friends on Friday and explained how the burglars broke into her establishment in a crash grab and showed the surveillance footage, which has not led authorities to any suspects. MORE

  1. It would be better not to advertise that you are sleeping in your store, this removes the inference of premeditation, that you were “lying in wait”.

Just tell the cops that you were working late doing inventory when you heard a noise. But make sure you kill the burglar, don’t want any conflicting statements muddying the water. Just rehearse,”I told him that I was armed and to stop but he approached me saying he was going to kill me and I could not see his hands. I was in fear for my life and I protected myself. You should be fine.

  2. If you’re doing it, never talk about it. Talking is just an attempt to persuade the enemy to quit his perceived attack. It’s a form of negotiation mostly based on your lack of desire to do what you believe you will have to do in the face of the attack. We see this all the time in circumstances small and large.

An empty drum bangs the loudest.

Once you accept that the people running things are active allies of the criminal class, and more importantly, active enemies of yourself personally (gas stoves anyone?) things become clearer. Voting used to be a means of negotiation with the people running things back when. Now that the technocracy has near complete control over voting outcomes that avenue isn’t available to us. Keep voting anyway, if you look hard enough you might just find a diamond up that goat’s ass.

Joe Biden, among other leading figures, recently gave away the national game, to wit: you’ll need F-15s to fight the government, your AR15s won’t do the trick (why are they so desperate to ban them then?).

What Biden said verified that the current government recognizes and embraces the fact that it is ann enemy to the people at large. Eric-insert aspersion here-Swallwell said a similar thing a couple of years ago (Biden doesn’t have thoughts, he borrows them). Take the hint. Those aren’t the only hints dropped in the recent past.

As a friend said, during discussion of an activity that would violate not only our new special laws but common law as well, ‘it never pays to advertise’.

  3. Disagree Rich-way too much talking with the police, who ARE NOT on your side.

I was in fear for my life and that’s it. Unless you have a lawyer on speed dial, you might spent a night a jail.

Personally, if it was my store, that body is turning up else where and NO call is made to the police. My number 1 rule of life is NEVER call the police unless there are witnesses or video

  4. You can clam up if you like but if you say nothing and the burglar is unarmed, you are guaranteed a trip downtown and a long night. Saying what I recommended and ONLY what I recommended at the scene helps you in a number of ways; it bolsters your claim of “active and immediate fear”, it portrays you as passive and level-headed, and it makes him the aggressor, advancing on you with malice in his heart.

I agree that the cops are not your friends but I also weigh the agenda of an overzealous DA and giving him contemporaneous statements, freely given of your complete innocence will go a long way in forcing his hand. And if he does go after you, there will be nothing in the police report and nothing a jury can use to implicate you in any way.

But again, that’s just what I would do.
