DMUK: Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s books are being rewritten by sensitivity gurus to remove language they deem offensive, including creating a world where no one is ‘fat’ and the Oompa Loompas are gender neutral.

Publisher Puffin has hired sensitivity readers to rewrite chunks of the author’s text to make sure the books ‘can continue to be enjoyed by all today’, resulting in extensive changes across Dahl’s work.

Considerable edits have been made to descriptions of the characters’ physical appearance – the new editions no longer use the word ‘fat’ which has been cut from every book, The Telegraph reported.

Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory can now only be described as ‘enormous’.

Hundreds of changes were made to the original text, extinguishing Dahl’s colourful and memorable descriptions, some over fifty years old, to make his characters less grotesque. more here

  1. …I guess it wouldn’t help to tell them these characters are SUPPOSED to be caricatures, would it?

    No?

…well, continue the bowdlerizing then, to make sure the author’s original point is lost, enjoy not selling books…

  2. Roald Dahl, of all writers. The incredible wit – both in the stories he wrote for adults and for kids.
Curious as to how they changed Pig. An amazingly funny short story, with a rather sanguinary ending.

  3. Looney Tunes will be next.
    I can already hear it:
Faggot season, dyke season, faggot season, dyke season, faggot season, dyke season, faggot season, dyke season, faggot season, dyke season, faggot season, dyke season.

  4. …next up: a takedown on Bing Crosby for casting animals in a bad light AND suggesting humans can, and maybe SHOULD, be better than they are…

“Would you like to swing on a star?
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule?

A mule is an animal with long funny ears
Kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
He’s just plain stupid with a stubborn streak

And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule

Or would you like to swing on a star?
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig?

A pig is an animal with dirt on his face
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
He has no manners when he eats his food
He’s fat and lazy and extremely rude

But if you don’t care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig

Or would you like to swing on a star?
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish?

A fish won’t do anything, but swim in a brook
He can’t write his name or read a book
To fool the people is his only thought
Ha, and though he’s slippery, he still gets caught

But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You might grow up to be a fish

New kind of jumped-up slippery fish
And all the monkeys aren’t in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So, you see it’s all up to you
You can be better than you are
You could be swingin’ on a star”

  5. Neutral grays and beige-no bright colors allowed.

His estate wants the checks to keep rolling in and to be marked safe from the woke. It’s disgusting and disheartening this was done with his family’s approval.

  6. So, after all the editing and removal of “offensive language” (offensive to whom? not offensive to me), what was left? Besides “a”, “an”, & “the”?

  7. These odious, officious correctors of characters are engaging in the literary equivalent of graffiti all over the imaginary world of my childhood. In a culture devoid of grammar, dependent on the word ‘like,’ and unable to spell without autocorrect, this is what publishers choose to edit?!

Buy copies of the literary classics, the country’s founding documents, and a big Bible NOW, hide them, and bequeath them to your children and grandchildren. Storing civilization is as important as food prepping.

I also like the one where Bugs keeps spinning the rifle barrel or moving the sight to the opposite end of the barrel.
Along with, “Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius”.

  9. You think THIS is bad, just IMAGINE how hard it will be to read the Spanish language version with all of the children referred to as niñxs, for starters, and probably all “neurtal” gendered in German…

    “Next up:
“Charlie & the Feminine Hygiene Products Factory””

Did you not read? The word “Feminine” is FORBIDDEN!

You may, however, say “Woman” as in “Woman hygiene products” since its impossible for anyone who isn’t a biologist to know what a “woman” is anyway.

    I have ruled.

  11. How soon until they begin repainting art they deem “intolerant” or “offensive”? They took down the statues they didn’t like—too difficult to alter bronze, etc.—but what’s to stop them from “improving” paintings? Or altering movies and classic television shows wholesale with CGI, as opposed to just withdrawing them from circulation?

Altering the wording of books is just the beginning. I wholeheartedly second @Little Morphin’ Annie’s recommendation. If you don’t acquire the literary works you love NOW, you may not recognize them soon.

“How soon until they begin repainting art they deem “intolerant” or “offensive”?”

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
    George Orwell, 1984
