GM Laying Off 1,300 Workers – Got $824M From Taxpayers In 2022

PTN:

General Motors is laying off 1,300 workers.

They just announced they would be delaying electric pickup truck production.

CBS News reported:

General Motors will lay off about 1,300 workers from two of its Michigan plants, according to WARN notices the company has filed with state regulators.

The job cuts at GM’s Orion Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly, which will take place in the new year, come after the automaker said in October that it would be delaying electric pickup truck production into 2025.

The layoffs at GM’s Orion plant will affect 945 workers, while 369 employees will be cut from the Lansing assembly plant.

The Orion plant produced the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV crossover, and GM is planning to produce additional electric vehicles, namely the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV at the plant. But the company announced in October that it would be delaying the start of production, sealing the fate of workers while the plant remains idled.

In 2022, GM got $824 million from taxpayers in Michigan.

GM promised to convert its Orion plant to make electric vehicles and that they’d create 4,000 jobs in Michigan. more here

  1. It’s getting nigh on impossible to find anybody — anybody — in govt, corp exec management, unions, and even a big chunk of ordinary working people, who aren’t out to get as much as they can any way they can. “Mouthful o’ gimme an’ a handful o’ much obliged go fuck yourself.”

  2. In Spring Hill TN, GM is completing construction of a $2.6 billion lithium battery cell manufacturing plant in a joint venture with LG Energy Solutions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Energy_Solution) called Ultium Cells, LLC. It is located on the same property where GM is currently producing Cadillac SUVs, and which will soon be producing the LYRIQ E-SUV crossover model.

This location was originally where GM started its Saturn corporate headquarters and assembly plant in 1985 – another GM new “innovative” concept car – that only lasted maybe 20 years. Not a good track record.

With this latest GM “innovative” all-in gamble, I’m predicting another Government Motors bail out within 10-20 years. It’s the Woke Way.

…that really pisses me off. Spring Hill is where they made my ’95 Saturn SL2, and I really liked that peppy little plastic car, it suited my need for a daily driver that had some giddyup, didn’t use much gas, and didn’t need much care. Only reason I don’t have it now is a drunk destroyed it at the curb in front of my house. It could still limp around on 3 wheels, so I donated it to a friend for Demolition Derby duty, and it did WAY better than I anticipated.

I tried to replace it with another Saturn, but they changed over to making them out of metal again and didn’t make the DOHC engines any more, so I decided I didn’t want just another GM and got a Toyota instead. Shortly after that they folded the label up completely, so I guess folks agreed with me on that.

So now they make batteries no one wants for trucks no one wants there instead.

Would have been better off making the silly little plastic cars…
