Seattle-area utility company asks residents to cut down on electricity use as temps plunge

“We are asking customers to conserve natural gas and electricity use through the evening hours. Due to the extreme cold temperatures facing our area, regional utilities are experiencing higher energy use than forecasted, and we need to reduce strain on the grid.” – story

  1. I’ve never been there, but I know several folks here have lived in the area.

    Tell me,

Has it gotten cold in Seattle in the winter before?

And was the power company able to cope then?

…I think I know the answers but I’m a Midwesterner so I’ll wait for those who know…

  2. Our local power company Avista asked its customers to conserve natural gas when it was extremely cold on Saturday and Sunday in the Spokane area. I have gas heat and keep my thermometer set at 68 degrees and we did very well. Although my car didn’t start Sat. but when it warmed up a little it started right away on Sunday. And now it’s supposed to snow like hell tomorrow but warm up to near 40 by the weekend and it’ll just be rain. What else is new it’s Winter which we’ll soon forget about in 5 or 6 months when Summer comes around again.

  3. Good thing we have a direct vent gas stove on one half of the house that keeps us toasty. Natural gas for the win! And these climatologists want to ban nat gas, what morons! The other half of the house is where the furnace thermostat is, surrounded by uninsulated brick walls built in 1950. It’s set at 65, any higher it never turns off.

Could you imagine dealing with a heat pump in this crap? Even if it did work, like what in the hell, I’m not made of money.

  4. In my county wood is the way to go. When we moved into our home the first thing we did was install the biggest wood stove we could find. Since then the surrounding counties limit when you can burn a wood stove. So the price of oak has dropped significantly.

  5. We went on a cruise some years ago and passed Cuba at night.
The only lights on were at Guantanamo Bay!
No shit – the rest of the island was dark.
Seems like Seattle’s going the way of Cuba.
Elections (even stolen elections) have consequences.

    Probably not a good sign.

  7. wa-wa land has grown significantly since Western Wa-wa last saw single digits; late 80’s or early 90’s comes to mind. Since then we’ve removed hydro dams, not sure that they’ve grown the natural gas capability, but that didn’t stop them from proposing a rate increase so they can build a commercial compressed natural gas plant for export use on ocean going vessels just this past fall.

Also finally blew the coolong towers for the WPPS, aptly named “whoops” nuclear project, so hey spend 200% of your budget to build 98% of a project, mothball it, then scrap it.

  8. A friend of mine says that Seattle is “ground zero” in a lot of ways:

    (1) Earthquakes
    (2) Tsunamis
    (3) Volcanoes
    (5) Wind and rain storms
    (4) Floods
    (6) Forest fires and choking smoke
    (7) Nuclear strikes from N. Korea or China

I asked him about being overrun by tree-hugging idiots…

“That’s ancient history!” he said. 🙂

  9. There was also a follow-on message from utility company, something about some NG delivery center off line. Because, weather never happens. Oh, wait. Its all around us.

  10. LOVE the irony in this similar article from yesterday:

Texas grid operator ERCOT (Electric RELIABILITY!!! Council of Texas) on Monday asked residents to conserve electricity use as temperatures fall below zero with the wind chill in some parts of the state.

  11. Built in 1785, I have photos of my house with people standing outside on the front yard. No power lines going into the house. No indoor plumbing, no insulation in the walls. Horse and carriage out by the road. We got it made, thank the lord, with chain saws and gas prices set to go up. FYI: 4 degrees this morning.
