Beryl pummels Texas with tornadoes, 90 mph gusts

Beryl was downgraded to a tropical storm late Monday morning as moved inland, but the storm was still wreaking havoc along its journey farther into Texas. The storm center passed just outside the Houston metro area, pummeling the nation’s fourth-largest metro area with hours of wind gusts over 70-80 mph and dumping over 10 inches of rain.

  1. It wasn’t supposed to affect my part of Texas too badly. It was worse than they thought, but as hurricanes go, it could have been a lot worse. By early afternoon, it was over, and the sun came out and the winds died down. I looked outside and the deer were hopping around like bucking broncos in a huge puddle of rainwater. They were having a ball.

  2. My friend down there has a generator and sent some pictures and descriptions. No power, no restaurants for 20 miles, only 1 grocery store around him has a generator, lotsa trees and fences down and localized flooding, but they have water at least for now. 2 fatalities hes heard of, one where a tree landed on a house and not sure about the other one. Not great but not horrible as hurricanes go as winds were 70-80 mph sustained. Could still be worse if they dont get power back up and metro Houston gets restless.

  3. My lawn could have used 10 inches of rain… And I pulled the limestone blocks from around my grill… Because I’m married to an accountant, and I could have used a new grill. :'(

  4. But seriously… Yes, it was a hurricane. We haven’t seen one in a while. Several years actually. Houston and the eastern woodlands seem to be ground zero. Amusingly, trivially even… It appears to have bollixed AT&T’s internet services. Ping time’s in state are the usual under 10ms… Anything out of state, 180 to 500+ ms… If you have family members you can’t reach, consider they might be falling back to WiFi/ISP service for calls and unable to connect.
