SOunds like a lesson learned.
Have a sniper or designated marksman (caliber of your choice, 22LR to 308) in a hidden blind near, but out of sight of any overhead aircraft.
If any of them swoop that close to be doing damage to the donated goods, have the DM start pot-shotting the aircraft. They’ll boot scoot damned quick.
