  1. I don’t remember it, but they say they tried it in the seventies and kids walking to school in the morning in the dark got hit by cars. I don’t remember quite a bit of the seventies.

  2. Daylight savings time is a fabricated construct instituted in the industrial age to make workers more productive and reward them with more free sunlight, rather than a raise.

  3. DST is stupid, there is the same amount of daylight regardless of what time we call it. Never understood why some people think we are manipulating the actual amount of day light by turning the clocks. All you need to do is adjust your personal schedule.

  4. I despise DST.

Fifty years ago I was the operations manager for a large-ish university computer center. This was so long ago it was still “data processing” and hadn’t become “information services” yet.

When it came time to “fall back” I had to let all running programs end normally and quiesce all started tasks, and then TURN OFF this room-sized multi-million dollar machine and let is SIT IDLE FOR ONE HOUR before cranking it up again.

Otherwise, when we would subsequently run the activity logs for the period, we would have jobs/tasks that had ended before they started. This was no-no and caused all sorts of mischief.

For a long time now, even tiny systems have an epoch (or absolute) clock plus a local clock for display, and keep an adjustment value to keep it all running smoothly.

During “spring forward” the same process had to be performed minus the one-hour idle time. We still had to shut things down and restart from scratch. INSANITY.

Personally, I’d like to see the whole globe running at the same clock time regardless of “time zone”. A work day of 0900-1700 in Sarasota would be 0600-1400 in San Diego. The probability of that happening is precisely zero, of course.

(Just to screw things up totally, I’d also like to see the universal adoption of the 13-month year. HAHAHA-HAAA-HAAA-HAAA-HAHAHA!)

  5. I remember the brew-ha-ha over Y2K at the phone company. Everybody was pissing their collective pants that the sky would fall and I just sat back and watched the chaos half expecting that the Y2K patches would implode. Then at midnight (everybody was on call) nothing happened. Turns out that the Y2K patches were Elephant repellant… you know they stuff you sprinkle in yer backyard to keep elephants out even tho you’ve never seen and elephant and there are no wild elephants in North America!

  6. There has been opposition to DST since its adoption. Why all the “support” now? Yes, when the sun is at its apogee it should be noon. PERIOD. Government screwing with time is inappropriate. Pretending that screwing with time somehow saves energy or similar bullshit was disproven handily during the sham permanent DST under the useless Ford administration. Several hundred people DIE every year because of the time change from heart attacks, automobile accidents, and other impacts of the lost hour. We have banned toys over fewer deaths, yet these happen EVERY YEAR but now all of a sudden people care and support the idea.
