California wildfires are here again and the state officials have done nothing to keep it from becoming a disaster. The Canyon Fire in Ventura County, north of Los Angeles, broke out on Thursday, rapidly growing and forcing evacuation orders for over 4,000 homes. more

  2. I lived in California for almost 40 years, and one thing I learned was that as a rule, Californian politicians don’t give a rat’s ass about its lower to middle class residents. Sure, sometimes California politicians will blather on about programs to help the homeless or other disadvantaged folks, but that’s just window dressing to buy votes.

    Aside from telling people to build homes out of more fire resistant material, I really can’t see anything the state has done about forest management or anything else to mitigate out-of-control fires. Thank God for climate change; it provides a convenient bogeyman for politicians to hide behind.

    Oddly, I have to disagree with you. Pete Wilson ran a great state and we actually had pretty good representation for conservatives. Even Arnold ran a great state compared to this fucking clown. Brown didn’t do much for this stae in 8 years. However he did make an effort to keep business here. The current asshole is a freaken business assassin. And he doesn’t care. Newsom has absolutely destroyed this state in 8 years. KILLED IT. It had to be intentional. Nobody is that stupid. By the way I had to google Pete Wilson to confirm the years he was Gov. The dudes 93. Couldn’t believe it. A rock solid conservative.

  18. @Brad: I moved to California during Jerry Brown’s first term. Then came Deukmajian and subsequently Pete Wilson – I don’t remember much about Deukmajian but Wilson was pretty good. After that was Gray Davis; he proposed tripling the car registration tax and that was a big issue during his recall. Arnold replaced Davis, and during his first term championed AB 32, which was California’s global warming legislation. Ironically, Schwarzenegger then tripled the car registration tax on his way out of the door. Then back to Jerry Brown for eight years, and now Newsom.

    For the record, I actually opposed Davis’ recall not because I liked Davis – I didn’t – but because Davis actually tried to do what he promised to do and I didn’t see a valid reason for a recall. Arnold actually slow walked implementation of AB 32 until after he was gone, and while I understand he was hamstrung by the California state legislature, I never thought of Arnold as a conservative.

    In my opinion, California’s rot has many causes – not the least of which is the apparent abandonment of the state by national Republicans and the current situation where the legislature is controlled by left-leaning Democrats who have a super-majority. Even Orange County, which was a bastion of Republicans, is now controlled by Democrats.

    I actually listened to Schwartzenegger’s last State of the State address; it was about 10 or 15 minutes long and almost solely focused on California’s fiscal irresponsibility. It didn’t do any good, and the state is still mired in continuous financial crunches and massive over-regulation which effectively prevents a lot of things like addressing the housing situation.

    For what it’s worth, I am originally from Illinois – which suffers from many of the same problems and politics that is harming California, only with more corruption (although I believe California is catching up in that area). Geographically, most of Illinois is red (just like California), but with deep blue urban areas that control the state politics.

    I have actually lived most of my life in California, and moved back to the mid-west due to family pressures. But I loved the state and, particularly in the late 1970s its “vibe,” and my criticisms are more out of frustration than any active dislike of California.

    I get it. Please understand I’m not pulling the “I’m for Cali, how dare you insult my state” bull shit. As usual you are on the money. My point is Gavin Newsom is a train wreck on steroids. Dumber than a box of rocks. Gavin Newsom took a profitable state, as bad as it was managed, and absolutely killed it. The guy deserves some sort of award. I don’t think being elected president is it.

  20. Brad, I’m not sure Newsom is dumber than a box of rocks. I think there is a good chance that this is all being done on purpose and for profit. Which of course is worse.
