The H-1B visa system is a scam, plain and simple. What started decades ago as a “temporary work program” to fill supposed gaps in specialized fields has turned into a full-blown racket that sells out American workers and ships our middle class right out the window. And US corporations are gaming the system, replacing qualified Americans with cheaper foreign labor, all while patting themselves on the back for being “innovative” and “diverse.”
This program is so rotten from the inside out, it can’t be fixed with a tweak here or a reform there. It’s corrupted to the core, and at this point, the only real solution might be to scrap the entire thing and start over with a true America First reset that puts American workers first, not multinational profits.

They import tech workers, and they then form an internal company “mafia” of sorts, which distorts hiring & promotions, etc… Even layoffs… They protect those on H1B’s over citizens.
Then they get green card status and move into management and double down on the scam, at which point they have formed expectations that they can abuse people on H1B status. If you lose your job on an H1B, you have 30 days to find a new sponsor or leave the country. This is highly exploitable. As a US citizen, I’ve spent 30 years toiling away under this system. There’s been a few exceptional years, and a lot of “yea I made above average wages, but the toll wasn’t worth it” years. A couple years ago I got the pleasure of quitting on one such manager, and he needed to keep actual US citizens on staff to support US Govt. operations. Sorry, not sorry!
But now the AI bubble is in full bloom. My role got offshored, half my US based team let go. I’ve been unemployed for nearly a year… All the H1B’s that got laid off with me found a sponsored seat inside of 30 days. I refuse to submit 100+ applications a week. So, I’ve managed to land all of three interviews. Tech can pay well… But you have to save most of it so you can ride out the storms.

Everything that @Kali Refugee said is the truth. My personal experience, too. My only source of satisfaction is that when my large international employer laid me off because a reorg eliminated my org chart slot, it took them five – FIVE – Indians to perform the same function, and they sucked at it.

Worked at a Fortune 500 company thirty years ago. They were laying off American programmers AND going to DC to ask for more H-1Bs because “there aren’t enough American programmers”. I see the bilgewater hasn’t changed since then.
