The Exposé: AI’s results are mediocre, Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols writes, and it’s as good as it’s going to get. He believes that the AI bubble is bursting.
“Most companies,” he says, “have found that AI’s golden promises are proving to be fool’s gold. I suspect that soon, people who’ve put their financial faith in AI stocks will be feeling foolish, too.” more
I read a few days ago¹ that the AI people are seeing rapidly diminishing returns on their efforts. The computational, power, and cooling costs are rising much faster than measurable improvement in AI performance and capability.
I suspect they found this out some time ago and have kept the lid on the news to keep investor money flowing their way as long as possible.
1. I can’t put my
fingermouse pointer on the article right now but I’ll post it if I find it later.I look at it this way, if yew need an entire nuclear plant to run yer thinking cap, there may be something wrong!
AI is like any complex computer program. Garbage in yields garbage out.
Where AI can be useful is as a tool to speed up software development by actual human software developers. The asshole executives just want to fire those developers and use the AI only, which is the typically stupid and greedy way executives think. AI should be developed for human augmentation; not replacement. Because an economy without humans is like concert with no crowds. What’s the point?
AI = devil spawn.
I’ve been riding the PLTR wave for a while now. Some real heavy weights are running it.
Lawyers are using it. And coming back with imaginary case law to back up their clients’ defense.
MJA – History will be changing very rapidly.
Hang on to your books… until they come to burn them!
Also the path of least resistance is very popular.
“look it up on the Internet”
Look it up in a book? That takes too much time!
“Just Google it”
We’re sliding down the slippery slope!

AI deep learning is good for things like figuring out how proteins can improperly fold and misperform their biological tasks. It’s also good for looking at vast data sets like star fields and figuring out hidden properties.
The fact that it can make things up from its learning data sets without your direction is a sign of what the intent of the programmers really is… control.
AI software will deliver what ever the buyer wants, good or bad. Buyers, suckers and blind believers will find out the hard way. $$$
AI is the data marketing version of Patent Medicines of the 1800’s.
Just without the opium and alcohol. Or the fun.
Took a course in AI 20 yeasrs ago. Thought it wasn’t ready for prime time then and somewhat vindicated to see it still isn’t.
If the AI bubble is “bursting”, then why are all of these data centers being built that will incorporate AI? Facebook is building one that is almost as big as Manhattan at a reported cost of $50 billion.
I may be wrong, but I think AI was the coon dog(s) that sniffed out all the democRAT money trails and slush funds for DOGE.
Uncle Al – So far as diminishing returns go, I think this is the new Space Race with China to get to the prize first… whatever the fuk it is, which is waay beyond my pay grade to know.
We don’t know who struck first, us or them. But we do know it was us that scorched the sky.
