Danish cows are producing less milk and collapsing, with farmers placing the blame on a controversial new feed additive that’s supposed to reduce their methane emissions.
Since 1 October, farmers in Denmark have begun adding Bovaer into their cows’ feed to reduce their production of the greenhouse gas methane as they graze.
Environmentalists say methane emissions from livestock are one of the major contributors to global warming.
Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten reported on Friday that it had spoken to a number of farmers who believe Bovaer is harming their herds. more

We used to use dried up meadow muffins (cow pies) for bases in my uncle’s cow pasture when we played baseball on his small farm in Dalton Gardens, Idaho just north of Coeur d’ Alene. They worked great except for the time my dad was trying to hit the baseball and fell down backwards and hit the back of his head in a not quite dry cow pie. We also used cow bladders out of freshly butchered cows to play football with as well until one time the cow bladder burst all over one of my younger brothers. Good times were had by all including my brothers and cousin and my dad and my uncle.

I’m pretty sure the cows are releasing methane because their diet and biology demands it. I’m also pretty sure that it’s not something you can fuck around with without adversely affecting the cow, as we can see. And I’m also really really sure that humans don’t want to be consuming the meat and milk of any animals that are consuming this feed additive.
