Why Are 42 Million Americans Relying On SNAP Benefits?

Zero Hedge-

Amid the furious debate over the government shutdown and the incoming freeze of SNAP food benefits, one important factor is often overlooked – Why are 42 million Americans, a number larger than the entire population of Canada, dependent on government subsidized groceries?  Isn’t this a time bomb waiting to explode regardless of a federal shutdown?

There have been a few temporary food stamp programs from the Great Depression through the 1950s, but they were limited in scale and funding was minimal.  It wasn’t until LBJ’s “Great Society” project in 1964 that food stamps slowly became a permanent mainstay of American life.  By 1969, food benefits were in full swing, yet, only 1.4% of the population used them.  Strict eligibility requirements kept the participation rate down until 1977.  more

  1. If you are a “single” mother with children to feed, name the fathers and the state will test their DNA to see if they are the father. Then the state will force the deadbeat fathers to pay child support. If that were to happen then there would probably be a lot fewer “single” moms out there.

  2. “Why are 42 million Americans … dependent on government subsidized groceries?”

The answer is similar to this:

Q: “Why do you climb mountains?”
    A: “Because they’re there.”

  3. I just read today that the average woman who is not on food stamps weighs 142 pounds. The average woman who is on food stamps weights 211 pounds.

When my dad was out of work in the early 1960s with 6 children and a wife to feed, we received a weekly box of gov’t food. It was medium-sized box which had generic peanut butter, cheese, powdered milk, assorted dried beans and some other stuff. Nothing remotely appealing to today’s palate. Now, every kind of processed food and treat is covered by SNAP. I’ve read plenty about SNAP recipients buying cases of pop just to dump it out in order to redeem the cans for cash. There are some big problems with all the welfare programs.

  4. Also, the elected representatives and senators are actively recruiting new recipients. The libs and rinos are both guilty of this treason! What is needed is to eliminate the right to vote if you are on government assistance. You can’t be voting for whoever provides the most handouts!

  5. Why Are 42 Million Americans Relying On SNAP Benefits?

    The Dems (with some help)
    — Taxed them into poverty
    — Exported their jobs
    — Devalued their dollars
    — Crippled the petroleum industry
    — Damn near killed the coal industry
    — Turned “health care” into Frankenstein’s monster
    — Made them believe creating wealth is evil
    — And are now buying their votes by taking the edge off starvation.

  6. 42 million people on SNAP is a huge number! The comparison to Canada’s population really puts it into perspective. It’s so true that the ‘why’ behind it is a crucial question, not just the shutdown debate. Thanks for bringing this up!

  7. I have never needed (nor waned) food stamps or an EBT card.

Always worked (even some bad jobs) to pay my bills.

Why so many o assisstance? The democrats. want it that way.

  8. Deny benefits for users, abusers and losers.
Must reapply under more stringent guidelines.
Must work to keep any benefits.
Stop the generational users, abusers and losers.
Congress created this abuse; they don’t have the intelligence to fix it.

  9. …the other thing that has made a substantial change to our welfare programs, especially food stamps, is that the stigma of taking tax dollars from other hard-working Americans has been removed. No longer do we think of people as “being on the dole.” I remember my dad and my mom felt awful about taking any gov’t hand-outs while my dad was out of work. They didn’t say anything to us children, but we could sense their distress at it and we knew better than to talk about it at school. It was a shameful thing to admit you couldn’t take care of things by yourself.

Now, we all know there are poor people who are unable to make it alone, and we wouldn’t think of looking down our noses at their poverty. But it’s hard to stomach seeing obese people in the check-out line with a cart full up with crap “food”, but also sporting all the day spa results (mani/pedi, hair weaves, eyelashes) and the latest iPhone, and then loading their “free” food into a late model SUV. It’s no exaggeration. We see it every week at the grocery store. There was one fellow, at least 100 pounds overweight, who had ten frozen pizzas and scooped up a dozen “family sized” candy bars at the check-out. All paid for with food stamps. He was probably on SSI disability, too. It’s a lifestyle.

  10. “…dependent on government subsidized groceries…”

For some definitions of “dependent”. I seem to recall something about a safety net and a hammock.

They’ll be fine without the excess carbs and sugar. Time to SNAP it all off.

  11. Again, who writes these headlines? As pointed out above, while it may ben52 million people, it sure as heck ain’t 42 million Americans.

Its all moral failing/undermining of our society, as there is no shame, all pride and entitlement. As to “pride”, it is the self-respect being replaced by self-esteem.

  12. Those that receive SNAP benefits, also seem to have enough money to get their eyelashes and dragon claw manicures.

WE are the dummies for joining the workforce and supporting ourselves and families.

  14. Something that my brother told me years ago about the food bank near where he lived has stuck with me. There was a laundromat next door that he used and would watch people go in, get bags of groceries, and meet people in the parking lot to give them the groceries for drugs. He stopped donating to food banks after that.

I think the same thing is happening with SNAP. They get their Snap cards and trade them for money to get their goodies; drugs, nails, wigs, tats, lashes, etc.

Of course, there are those who load up on crap from the grocery stores, too. So they must keep some of the money in order to do that, too.
