15. Starve, my ass. You can’t even go hungry in America w/o really trying. My three kids and I ate baked chicken one night, beans and bacon soup three nights and carnitas three nights. Forty goddamn dollars and I took part of the beans and carnitas to a friend who lives alone. For Christ’s sake it simply cannot be done. The grand total for all three meals/day for the week might have been $60. If the spuds and tomatoes didn’t come out of my truck patch, maybe $65. There is absolutely no Goddamn way that a family of four can’t eat their fill on $250/mo. I froze carnitas and a quart of bean soup and ate the leftover chicken in an omelette for breakfast yesterday. I’ll make a couple gallons of split pea soup and some other something today. I try and make food that is versatile and tastes good. We always have hundreds of pounds of deer and elk steaks in the freezer, but if you are on welfare you can get by w/o it. Two lbs of Italian makes a lot of spaghetti sauce. I don’t know what beef costs, we don’t buy it. Pork butt is on sale all the time though and it makes carnitas, chile verde and pulled pork cheap.

16. I worked for a year at a gas station/ convenience store in a small northern Illinois town. There was a large Section 8 housing complex behind the store. at least 25% of our sales were on their LINK cards. There was one black woman with a LINK card and her two kids both had EBT cards from school. They were getting more than $4,000/month in government handouts.
