The big news coming out of ACIP’s second and final meeting today was the completion of the deferred vote from day 1 on the hepatitis B vaccine.
The committee voted 6-4 with 1 member abstaining.
The guidance language for the hepatitis vaccine now reads:
“For infants born to HBsAg-negative women: ACIP recommends individual-based decision-making, in consultation with a health care provider, for parents deciding when or if to give the HBV vaccine, including the birth dose. A Parents and health care providers should consider vaccine benefits, vaccine risks, and infection risks. For those not receiving the HBV birth dose, it is suggested that the initial dose is administered no earlier than 2 months of age.”
For viewers watching the ACIP livestream, one thing became clear – a change in consciousness was now visible to even the casual observer. Parental rights, common sense, admissions of the reality of limited safety data/failed surveillance systems and much more drove the meetings momentum while holdovers from what can now be seen as the dark ages of public health still argued ‘safe and effective’ refusing to acknowledge the risk of vaccine(s). more
