A ban on junk food may be in the works for food stamp recipients

Just The News: U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told reporters at the White House that she looks forward to working with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to make changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program, including potentially banning benefits from being used on junk foods.

“I look forward to working with Bobby Kennedy as we figure out, do we have the healthiest choices?” she said. “So when a taxpayer is putting money into SNAP, are they okay with us using their tax dollars to feed really bad food and sugary drinks to children who perhaps need something more nutritious?”

She suggested that Elon Musk and the new Department of Government Efficiency examine the SNAP program for waste. more

  1. good start. next ban them from getting cash back from transactions. too many times I see these folks buy a candy bar with max cash back then go use that money to buy booze or whatever.

  2. There’s an old saying:”BEGGERS CAN’T BE CHOOSERS.” Don’t like it? Get a JOB!!! Going forward, ONLY PRIVATELY AND VOLUNTARILY-FUNDED CHARITIES should be allowed to operate in this country…PERIOD. That includes a complete elimination of all CORPORATE WELFARE TOO.

  3. Someone will quickly find a way to work around the ban. I work in the convenience store industry. We have a store in Missouri that told me one of his competitors sells raw chicken, which is allowed with food stamps, then offers to cook it for free. Another store in a different town sells all the components of a taco (again, allowed on stamps) then cooks the meat and puts together the taco for free.

  4. Provide a bag of rice and a bag of beans, and government cheese. When I have been broke that’s what I bought. Rice, beans and block cheese. Take away their Obama phones and give them a flip phone that they can use in emergencies or whatever. No internet, we fund libraries and they have computer access available there.

  5. @JDHasty:

…we fund libraries and they have computer access available there.

    I like that a lot!

But let’s make the library accessible only through a decontamination chamber and shower room, and we’ll loan ’em paper coveralls and booties while we fumigate their clothes. No charge, of course.

Three hour maximum stay, and no masturbating on premises.

  6. I second a lot of these comments – down with food stamps. I remember when people lined up for Government Cheese and powdered milk. They were grateful – because hunger is the best sauce.

  7. Hell – make them line up and give them only essentials – bread, milk, potatoes, cheese, etc. – no money or cards, no phone and nothing beyond what is necessary for survival. Just what @JDHasty says. Want something else to eat or a phone – get a damn job. You’d cut 50% or more off welfare benefits the first week. Hunger is a great motivator. They have NO INCENTIVE as the system works today. Eliminate the ability to scam the system, also.

  8. I can usually see by the contents of a buggy their rung on the ladder.
Chips, cookies, Little Debbie, soda, processed goyslop in a box, now with more added sugar.
Wouldn’t allow it in my pantry, seems I pay for it.
They are killing themselves and their families, then, I pay again.

  9. I get behind these folks sometimes in the checkout and they’ll have a cart full of goodies and their bill will be four or five hundred dollars.
They pay with their EBT and a big smile on their faces.
Then I get really pissed off when I as a single person get my total for two or three bags and it’s damn near half my earnings for the day from working my tail off.
    It just isn’t right.
And then there’s all the food trucks that pop up all the time at the churches or wherever because supposedly everyone is starving.
I get by fine. Just wish things were cheaper.

  10. It’s not so much that they’re buying junk food. It’s the 2 kids with iphones, and another playing with a nintendo switch, and then when they’re done “paying” for the junk food, a wad of cash comes out for the beer and other alcohol. But don’t worry about the junk food. They threw in some ribs and seafood, too.
